Course Description:
Covers elementary programming concepts, including variable types, data structures, and flow control. Provides an introduction to linear algebra and probability and statistics. Numerical methods relevant to MechE, including approximation (interpolation, least squares, and statistical regression), integration, solution of linear and nonlinear equations, and ordinary differential equations. Presents deterministic and probabilistic approaches. Uses examples from MechE, particularly from robotics, dynamics, and structural analysis. Assignments require MATLAB programming.
2.090 meets with 2.086 the first half of the term and 2.087 and 2.088 meets with 2.086 the second half of the term.

Quiz 4 | Professor Patera's Special Office Hours
Quiz 4 will take place in the evening at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, 5 December, in Rooms 1-190 and 3-270. Owing to our evening quiz, there will be no class Wednesday, although the afternoon recitation will be held as usual.
Students with last names beginning “A” through “L” should report to Room 1-190; students with last names beginning “M” through “Z” should report to Room 3-270.
Recall from the Study Guide that Quiz 4 will be "open book" and that you may refer to the text and other class materials as well as your own notes and scripts.
You will not need a calculator for Quiz 4; however you can use a calculator, if you like, in order to check simple arithmetic operations. As always, laptops, tablets, and smartphones are not permitted.
Professor Patera will hold special office hours on Wednesday, 5 December, from 12:30--2 PM in the usual lecture room. During these office hours, he will focus on the Quiz 4 Sampler.

End of term summary for 2.086
You have a quiz the evening of Wednesday, 5 December. More details are available in the Study Guide; we will remind you of room assignments next week. Note Professor Patera will hold his usual pre-quiz special office hours 12:30--2:00 on the day of the quiz in the usual lecture room (recall there is no lecture the day of the quiz).
You have a final problem set, PSet_5, due at the beginning of the last class, 12:30 PM on Wednesday, 12 December. **Note PSet_5 is not optional --- it counts just as much as PSets 1, 2, and 3.**
You are currently working on Matlab Exercises Rec10_11 and there will also be a Matlab Exercises Rec12 for the week of 3 December. (To comply with end of term regulations, Matlab Exercises Rec12 will be due at 5PM on Friday, 7 December.)
There will be _no_ Matlab Exercises for the week of 10 December. (A Matlab Exercises on "structures" was previously marked as "optional" on the syllabus. The syllabus has been updated to indicate no Matlab Exercises.)
In the last week of classes (week of 10 December) we will hold recitations on Monday and Tuesday however Wednesday recitation is cancelled (as you will have already completed PSet_5). Wednesday, 12 December, is the last day of classes for the semester.
