Multi-modal material perception:
This year’s topic is multi-modal material perception. How can a
human, or a computer, infer material properties using vision,
audition, and/or touch? This includes mechanical properties such as
density, rigidity, and roughness, as well as optical properties
such as gloss and translucency. Through readings, demos, and
discussions, we’ll consider both passive and active sensing
(probing or manipulating an object to determine its properties).
We’ll also discuss machine learning of material perception, and the
problems of constructing ground truth databases for both passive
and active perception.
