Looking forward to hearing readings of the Themes and Variations of Alyssa, Harry, Linette and Julia on Thursday. When you send your final draft to Eileen Huang <ejhuang@alum.mit.edu> don't forget to cc. me and include a nice cover note.

Be prepared to do your class evaluation during class on Thursday.

We'll also continue with our analysis of Schumman's Kleine Studie and our study of neighboring diminished seventh chords.

Preparation for Tuesday, December 1

First up: Have a pleasant and safe Thanksgiving break!

Here is the recording of today's class, Thursday, November 19:

Your written work now is entirely focussed upon writing 4-6 variations on the theme that you have completed. Make sure that I have approved the theme before you begin your work: any problems with the theme that are left unfixed will almost certainly carry over into the variations. Other than that, have fun with the variations: I will gladly respond to any work-in-progress that you send me at any time.

Remember: One of your variations (not the last!) must be in the parallel minor key. If you're uncertain how to begin this work, try transposing  your original theme to the parallel minor: The effect might inspire you!

On December 1 we will complete our consideration of modal mixture. At some point please listen with the score (available on Stellar) to Chopin's Prelude No. 21 in Bb Major. What is happening in the middle section, mm. 17 ff., which seems so remote from the home key? How does Chopin return to the tonic?

Preparation for Thursday, November 19

The main area to focus your attention now is upon the composition of your variations. You should aim to have a set of 4-6 variations finished by the end of the month, ready to send to our pianist in time for her to learn them. Send me your variations as you complete them.

On Thursday we shall start another unit under having to do with chromatic harmony, and begin looking at some of the music under the heading 'Mixture' ("Borrowed" chords).
