Information:
Elementary programming concepts including variable types, data structures, flow control. Introduction to linear algebra and probability. Numerical methods relevant to MechE including approximation (interpolation, least squares and statistical regression), integration, solution of linear and nonlinear equations, and ordinary differential equations. Deterministic and probabilistic approaches. Examples from MechE in particular from robotics, dynamics, and structural analysis. Assignments requiring MATLAB programming.

2.086 Endgame
There will be no new material in lecture this week. Today's lecture will be a detailed example: application of Newton iteration (and the Newton.m code you are using in Problem Set 5) to a more complicated nonlinear problem --- the catenary. Thursday's lecture period will be devoted to a structured feedback session: an opportunity, for those of you interested, to suggest improvements to 2.086 related to particular aspects of the course.
