Lecture #1: Intro - WHY MATERIALS MATTER? (+some house keeping issues)

Dear 1.035 Scholars,

I am looking very much forward to start today with introducing you to the rich world of Mechanics of Materials.
The lecture starts at 11:05am in room 1-237, and I will finish at 11:55am.

I have put the lecture syllabus/schedule on the 1.035 webpage, together with lecture notes, that I kindly ask you to load down.
This is a materials class. Theoretical concepts introduced in lectures will be backed up by (1) hands-on experience in the Lab sessions, one of which you have started already yesterday; (2) student projects on sustainable cement-based materials. There will be also 2 Quizzes scheduled for February 24 and April 7, 2017; and a Final...

The final grade in 1.035 will also be based on these 4 components:
-   1/4 Lab Assignments (with a focus on the Lab book which you will receive shortly)
-   1/4 Student Project
-   1/4 2 Quizzes
-   1/4 Final.

We have an exciting term in front of us, for which I wish you all the very best.
Your 1.035 team: Franz-Josef Ulm, Mehdi Akbarian
