05/31/2007 -- The Final Exam is now linked here.

In preparation for the final exam, Prof. Zwiebach will give a review/practice
session on Monday, May 21, at 7:30 pm in room 4-231.

The final is at the Johnson Ice Rink on Wednesday, May 23, from 9:00am to 12:00 noon.

The final test will require a calculator. You can also prepare a 3-page formula sheet.

Here is a set of practice problems relevant to the material that we are covering in the last two weeks of class.This is not a homework. Solutions will be published next week. A good study strategy would be to work for an hour or so on each problem before reading its solution.

05/01/2007 -- There have been requests for the TeX file for Alan Guth's review notes, 8251-test2-review.tex,. It is formatted as Plain TeX, and uses Guth's macro files gmacro.tex and ggfontcm.tex. The currently posted TeX and PDF versions correct two typos (Eqs. (3.43) and (4.32)) in yesterday's version.

04/30/2007 -- Alan Guth has prepared a set of Review Notes for Test 2, and he suggests that you print them and bring a copy to the review session tonight: Room 24-307, 7:00 pm.

  • Office Hours next week will be on Wednesday April 25, 7:30-9:30pm, in 8-320.
  • **UPDATED ROOM*** Review session for the test (Wednesday May 2) will be held on Monday April 30, at 7:00pm, in 24-307.

04/16/2007 -- Four new announcements:

  • Although there are no classes on Tuesday, 4/17/07, Alan Guth will have office hours from 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm, Room 8-320. Note that the starting and ending times are both one half hour later than usual.
  • Solutions to Homework 8 are posted.
  • If you had trouble reading the last page of the solutions to Homework 7, you will be happy to know that a new version has been posted. The original version was posted by mistake with Macintosh fonts. If you have trouble reading any of the files on the 8.251 web site, please inform Alan Guth.
  • A corrected version of Homework 9 has been posted. In Problem 5(b), the word "from" was changed to "form".

  • Tuesday, April 3: Lecture is cancelled.
  • Wednesday, April 4: Prof. Zwiebach will hold office hours from 8:30 - 10:00 pm, in 8-320.
  • Friday, April 6: Recitation will be replaced by a lecture by Prof. Zwiebach; usual recitation time and place: 2:00 pm, 56-114.

03/14/2007 -- There are a number of announcements:

  • Prof. Zwiebach will hold office hours (at his office, NE25 - 4035) Tuesday March 20 and Wednesday March 21 from 2:30 to 3:30pm.
  • Test on W, March 21: Bring a calculator and a ruler. Chapter 8 is not included.
  • Homework 6: Problems 4, 5, and 6 are now due on Friday March 23, at noon. Problems 1, 2, and 3 are still due today (March 20) at 5:00 pm. The solutions to these problems will be posted at 5:00pm.
  • Following institute regulations concerning tests outside class time, the Friday (March 23) recitation has been cancelled.

03/14/2007 -- There are a number of announcements:

  • On Monday evening, 3/19/07, at 7 pm, Alan Guth will hold a review session in Room 4-231. The review session will probably run about an hour and a half, and will be followed by an office hour.
  • The midterm exam from 2005, and its solutions, are available to help you study for Test 1.
  • Test 1 will take place on Wednesday evening, 7:30 - 9:00 pm, in Walker Memorial, Room 50-340. The test will be closed book, but you may bring 2 pages (or 2 sides of one page) of personal notes that you will be allowed to use during the test. Bring calculators.
  • Homework 6 has been corrected. (Problem 1(d) has been revised.)
  • Alan Guth wanted to patch up his discussion of cosmic string deficit angles in recitation last Friday, so he has written the memo linked here.

03/13/2007 -- Homework 6, due Tuesday, March 20, is now available.

03/09/2007 -- Despite remarks in recitation about the possibility of postponing Homework 5, it is NOT postponed. Office hours will take place Monday, 3/12/07, at the usual time and place, 7-9 pm in 8-320, with Prof. Zwiebach. Homework 5 is due on Tuesday, 3/13/07, at 5 pm, as originally scheduled.

  • David Ely (8.251 student) has brought to our attention, an online book on tensor calculus at http://www.math.odu.edu/~jhh/counter2.html. It seems to have a nice detailed discussion of index notation.

  • Office hours this Monday, February 12, 7-9 pm, Room 8-320. Come with your questions on homework 1.
