18.022  Multivariate and Vector Calculus

Lecture:  TR1,F2  (4-370)        

Course Content: 

Vector algebra, dot product, matrices, determinant. Functions of several variables, continuity, differentiability, derivative. Parametrized curves, arc length, curvature, torsion. Vector fields, gradient, curl, divergence. Multiple integrals, change of variables, line integrals, surface integrals.  Stokes' theorem in one, two, and three dimensions.

Remarks for the Exam

* Epsilons and Deltas will NOT be on the exam.

* There is some confusion about the way I stated Taylor's theorem in lecture (indeed, there may have been a slight error in notation). If there is confusion, please refer to the treatment IN THE TEXTBOOK, which is correct.

Final Office Hours

Prof. Kemp's final office hours for 18.022 (sniffle) will be held TOMORROW (Wednesday, December 16) 10-1 in his office, 2-175.

Special Office Hours

This week, Prof. Kemp's second office hour will be on Thursday, 2-3pm (immediately following the final lecture), and there will be no office hour on Friday.

Pre-Final-Exam Grades

I have posted a letter grade which is a conservative estimate of where you stand in the class based on all your work up to the final exam.  As you know, the final exam is worth 25% of your final grade; this should allow you to work out everything you need to know about how well you must perform on the final to pass or get your favourite letter.

Practice Exam 3 posted

I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving.  I have now posted the practice exam -- it is in the "Materials" section on stellar.  I will post solutions to it tomorrow evening.  Enjoy!
