Staff Changes / Updated Syllabus Posted

Dear class,

As of today, Prof. Kolpak is taking a leave of absence from teaching duties. For the remainder of the semester, Dr. Giuseppe Romano will replace her. Starting tomorrow, he will run the lab sections that were previously run by Prof. Kolpak, and he will be holding office hours at the same times that she did (Wed, Thurs from 5-7 PM). Note that Dr. Romano's office hours will happen in 5-214.

These changes are reflected in the new version of the syllabus ("Subject Overview and Policies"), which is now posted under Materials/General. When you click on the link, you may want to reload the page to make sure you get the latest version of the document (the file name should end in 'v10') instead of what's stored in your browser's cache.

In the latest syllabus, the office hours for all 9 staff members (4 faculty, 5 TAs) are now up-to-date and correct.

Best,

the 2.086 staff

We have LAB Hours this Week as usual!

We have had and will have LAB hours as usual this week.
You can also come to this Sunday office hour from 6-9 pm in room 5-314 if you still have any pending questions or you want to work on your HW5 in a lab-style environment.

A New Live Script: Function Review

We had a review on Functions during the labs last week. This Live Script contains a detailed version of those Function Review sessions. If you could not attend any of our labs last week, you are encouraged to review this live script, especially if you are not completely sure when and how to use function handles (anonymous functions) or regular/named functions.

This live script file is now posted on Stellar under the title of:

Functions Review

in the “ Codes for Demonstrations in Lab ” section of “Materials” for 2.086.

A New Live Script Posted: Using Matlab to Symbolically Solve an ODE

During the last lecture, the process of obtaining an Analytical solution for an Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) was shown by solving the following example:

            x'' + x' - 2x = sin(t)        with      x(0) = 0                        and      x'(0) = 1.

At last week labs, we showed how to use Matlab’s symbolic functions to solve the same ODE.

This Live Script contains an expanded/detailed version of using Matlab to symbolically solve the above ODE. If you could not attend any of our labs last week, you are encouraged to review this Live Script. And if you attended one of those labs, you might still learn some new points which we might not have covered in those labs. For example:

  • -       Using Matlab’s function “expand” to get an expanded form of a compact symbolic expression,
  • -       Comparing ode45 (Matlab’s Numerical solution) results with the Analytical solution,
  • -       Visually observing the Matlab’s adaptive approach in ode45 for choosing time steps,
  • -

This live script file (odeSymbolicSolutionV3.mxl) is posted on Stellar with the title of:

Using Matlab to Symbolically Solve an ODE

under the “ Codes for Demonstrations in Lab ” section of “Materials” for 2.086.
