ESD.162/15.032/6.695  Engineering, Economics and Regulation of the Electric Power Sector

Spring 2014

Instructors: Jose Ignacio Perez-Arriaga, Christopher Roland Knittel, Carlos Batlle Lopez

TA: Tommy Chun Ting Leung

Lecture:  MW 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM  (E51-376)
Recitation:  F 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM  (E51-149)

Information:

The course presents an in-depth interdisciplinary perspective of the electric power sector, with regulation providing the link among the engineering, economic, legal and environmental viewpoints.
Electricity markets, incentive regulation of networks, reliability of service, renewable energy sources, contemporary network issues, retail competition, tariff design, distributed generation, rural electrification, multinational electricity markets, environmental impacts, future of utilities and strategic sustainability issues will be addressed under both traditional and competitive regulatory frameworks.
The course will make available the engineering, economic and legal basis to critically evaluate the regulatory instruments that are used worldwide for electricity supply activities that are performed as regulated monopolies or under competitive conditions. Most of these regulatory approaches are also of application in other industrial sectors.
The knowledge acquired in the course will provide the comprehensive understanding of electric power systems that will be needed for research in this field, as well as for future professional activities in the energy sector, whether in industry, government or consulting.
Prerequisites: Permission by instructor (Open to undergraduates). Preferably with background in policy analysis, microeconomics and/or engineering/science.

more winners, evaluations and farewell

Hi all,
Please, remember to do the class evaluations going to:
http://web.mit.edu/subjectevaluation/
This is also for listeners. It will take a few minutes and it is very useful for us. You only have until Monday May 19 at 9 am to do it.
The ex-aequo winners of the 5 minute presentations were Jenny Hu and Harrison Bromley. Not only clear and engaging presentations, but also two great term papers with much work and personal component in them. Congratulations to the winners and also to most of you, who have done a very good job and endured the "grilling session" quite successfully.
This is a last minute decision, before I board my plane to Madrid, and there is just one "reward" waiting in my office. I am sure Tommy will manage...
Finally, I hope you will have a well-deserved rest, have a great summer and perhaps we shall meet somewhere in some beach soon.
Cheers
Ignacio

and the winners are...

Hi all,
Congratulations again for good term papers and also now for excellent presentations.
Carlos, Tommy and I, after hours of debate, have agreed that the best presentations for the individual term papers are:
1st: Carlos de la Pena (he knows how good the Spanish wine can be)
2nd: Doug Ellman (he will be in Spain shortly and will be able to compare)
Congratulations to both and to all the contenders for excellent presentations.
On Friday we shall announce the winners of the 5 minute presentation context.
Cheers
Ignacio

Announcements

Hi all,

Just two short announcements as you head into the weekend. First, for those of you that went to the ISO-NE field trip, if you would like to continue the conversations that you had with Eric on demand response or Mark on resource adequacy, both have given me their contact information. Let me know, and I will put you in touch.

Second, we only have two responses thus far for class evaluations (and there are almost 40 of you in this class, including listeners)! Please help us out and let us know what's great and awful about our class:
http://web.mit.edu/subjectevaluation/

Thanks, and good luck with those final papers!
