Wexler lab announcement

Language Development

The Wexler ab/Normal Language Lab (http://wexlerlab.mit.edu) is looking for IAP and Spring UROPs (for credit or volunteer). Our lab is interested in language and how it is instantiated in the brain. We mostly study first language acquisition, aphasia, Down syndrome, Williams syndrome, autism, and Specific Language Impairment, and work with both children and adults. The research projects for which we are seeking help mainly involve first language acquisition and language in autism spectrum disorders. Feel free to forward this along to anyone you think might be interested.

Prerequisites: A background in linguistics is helpful but not necessary. We are
looking for a commitment of between 10 and 20 hours per week during IAP.
Candidates must be free for testing at least three mornings and/or afternoons
per week, and must be willing to continue with the UROP into the spring
semester.

Contact: Nadya Modyanova, nnm@mit.edu. Please write if you'd like to schedule a meeting or simply have questions, and make sure to include a copy of your CV/resume.

correction to correction

Dear 24.900,

Mistakes were made in the previous correction to the Lardil problem set. The last two lines of the first page should actually be as follows (where capitals represent the retroflex consonants):

Nuka Nukun Nukur 'water'
kaTa kaTun kaTur 'child'

That is, the original form for 'child' was correct, and the real correction is in the second-to-last form, 'water.'

NOTE: If you have /already/ worked through the problem and have a solution, feel free to ignore this message and turn it in as it is. Points will not be deducted for solutions that cover the data as it was originally written, or as it was after the first correction. But these final changes should make it easier to account for the data.

Sorry for the confusion.

More Study Materials for Quiz 2

The solution to the second problem passed out in sections on Friday 11/17 (the Lenakel Stress Assignment Problem) has been posted on the Materials page in the Resources section. All of the relevant data is reproduced at the beginning of the solution, so don't worry if you lost the original problem.

Also, a copy of the feature chart that was included in the phonology packet handed out in sections (Nov 3) has been posted under the Resources section (in which a typo has been fixed; the affricates were not marked for the feature strident in the chart, and they should be specified as [+strident]).
