Friday's Seminar

Hi All,

Good luck on the quiz tomorrow. We will be having our last seminar this Friday. Please read the chapter from Thomas’ “What machines can’t do” ignoring the theory introduction included before the chapter (it doesn’t make much sense separated from the larger context of the book). We will discuss the first case in the seminar for certain and try to get to the second.

I will send you your grade and comments on your paper via email and return the hardcopy on Friday.

Good luck and see you Friday!

Power and Resources

Hi All,

Craig and Paul are leading the seminar this week and ask the following questions:

Thirty years after the Kotter article is written, are the ideas it promotes regarding power still relevant in today's organization?  In what situations are these techniques applicable?  How has today's organizational
structure changed in ways that would affect the acquisition and usage of power?

The Kunda article, written in 1992, describes the ambivalence employees feel towards the use of culture as a method to affect employee behavior.  Which types of organizations will benefit most from this approach?  How does applying normative control through corporate culture affect the acquisition and usage of power?

X-Teams and Connectors

Hi All

For tomorrow....

Would you describe yourself as a connector, maven, or salesmen?  Can these roles be situational? Or, are there pre-existing conditions or characteristics that prevent individuals from across multiple roles? What is the implication of these answers for your role on a team that balances internal and external interaction?
