5.70/10.546/20.465  Statistical Thermodynamics with Biological Applications

Fall 2008

Instructors: Arup K Chakraborty, John M Deutch

T. A. : Mikhail Wolfson, Huan Zheng

Lecture:  MWF: 11, R: 8  (4-270)

Subject Description:

The class develops classical equilibrium and time dependent statistical mechanical concepts and supporting computer simulation methods for application to chemical and biological problems. Examples of applications include lattice models of binding, ionic and non-ionic solutions, polymer and protein conformations, the hydrophobic effect, and molecular motors; particular attention given to understanding the complex biochemical and biophysical processes underlying cell signaling (especially in cells of the immune system), cell migration, and the structure and dynamics of cell membranes.

Text for the class

We recommend two texts, both in paper back.

  1. T. Hill. An Introduction to Statistical Thermodynamics. Dover.

  2. D. Chandler. Introduction to Modern Statistical Mechanics. Oxford University Press, 1987.

CORRECTION: NO LECTURE TOMORROW

Hello, all:

There is no lecture tomorrow, Thursday, 12/4.
That last post was entirely my mistake, and was the result of me not being in class at time zero to hear Prof. Chakraborty's announcement.

Sorry for the confusion!

Problem Set #7

Hello, all:

I have posted Problem Set #7. You should look over and attempt to solve the problems, but there is no due date for Problem Set #7, as it will not be graded.
