Some Finals Week Announcements

Hi Everyone,

First, in case you missed it - Robert Stavins (one of last Tuesday's guest lecturers) is on this weeks " Political Scene" podcast. The podcast is produced by the New Yorker, and this week it is a mid-Copenhagen update. He talks about many of the same things he talked about in lecture, but he also comments further on the domestic politics surrounding a climate bill. I would recommend listening to it!

Only one major event is left in the course - the final for ISE students. The final is on Thursday morning from 9 am to noon in the regular lecture-hall (54-100). It is closed notes and closed books. You should bring a calculator. I have gotten a few questions regarding how to prepare for it and here is probably the best I can say:

If you were in class and did all of the reading you are in real good shape. We won't be doing anything too computationally intensive due to the time limits and the fact that you will be limited to the exam time. You should understand all of the concepts which were included in the homeworks and exams along with the issues that were brought up about different technologies (especially things which come up again and again with different technologies). We will be trying to test how you would assess an energy technology, proposal, or policy.

SE students, thanks for working with us to make the presentation schedule work. I really enjoyed all of those that I sat in, and I know that the rest of the faculty spoke highly of the week in general.

Best,

Addison

Guiadance for the SE Term Paper Presentations

Hi All,

Professor Golay has asked me to pass on this note from him on the Term Paper Presentations:

  • Improve your paper and presentation by reflecting on faculty feedback on your draft.
  • Arrive on time for your presentation.
  • Dress professionally (business casual).
  • Have your presentation loaded onto a memory stick that we shall load onto a provided Windows PC (You might check out the presentation on a Windows machine prior to your speaking time.  Use of pdf rather than Power Point format may reduce software compatibility problems).
  • Prepare to speak for no more than 20 minutes.
  • Expect faculty questions to occupy an additional 10 minutes.
  • Emphasize the important points of your paper, but not everything that you learned.
  • Highlight the important factors of your critical analysis.

Critical analysis
Critical analysis focuses upon factors of uncertainty affecting your conclusions.  We want you to be clear in identifying such factors, and showing where the literature may be uncertain, needing further work or - even - wrong.  What we really wish to learn from you is what you conclude from the literature, and how sure you think these conclusions are (it is not necessary to be sure).

Good Luck!

-Prof. Golay

P.S. The Final Term Papers will be due electronically (on stellar) at 11:59 PM on the 11th of December.
