Review Problem and Solution
Dear Urban OR Students:You may recall that, during one of the queuing lectures, I distributed a review problem and did part of it on the blackboard.
A couple of people thought it would be useful to have the full solution on the website -- and indeed this is good review material. I have therefore posted the problem and solution on our site. You can find these under "Supplementary Readings" near the bottom of the list.
Thanks,
Amedeo Odoni

Regarding Quiz 2
Dear Urban OR students:A couple of people have inquired about the coverage of Quiz 2. I have itemized below the material that was covered in the lectures I gave, most of them in the second half of the course.
Please keep in mind that the best way to prepare is to review the problem sets and their solutions, as well as the old quizzes and solutions that Anna posted on our website, and make sure you understand them.
Chapter 4: Queueing
We have covered essentially the entire chapter with the following exceptions:
Sections 4.8.2, 4.8.4, 4.9.3, 4.11
You are NOT responsible for the material in these four sections.
In general, I would recommend quickly reviewing the lecture notes, instead of reading the book. All the lecture notes have been posted. Please do not worry about the derivation of the waiting time for preemptive M/M/1 queues, which is presented in the last 5 slides of Lecture 4 on Queues. We did not have time to cover this.
Chapter 6: Networks
Please rely primarily on your lecture notes, not the book.
The material in the book that you are responsible for is in:
Section 6.4 (but skip Sections 6.4.9, 6.4.10, 6.4.11, 6.4.13 and 6.4.14)
Section 6.5 (but skip 6.5.3, 6.5.5, 6.5.6, 6.5.7, and 6.5.8)
Once again, it is best to quickly review the lecture notes. Do not worry about the stochastic queue median problem in Lecture 4 on Networks.
You are also reminded that I have office hours tomorrow (Thursday) from 1 to 2:30. And I will be checking my mail over the weekend for questions you may have.
Thanks,
Amedeo Odoni

PDF version of textbook chapters 2-6
I know it's a little late in the term, but Alyona Michel has kindly sent us a PDF and Word versions of chapters 2-6 from the textbook. It is now posted under the supplementary readings tab if anybody would prefer this for printing or studying. Have a great weekend!Announced on 02 December 2011 10:04 a.m. by Anna Teytelman
A Couple of Important Notes about Problem Set 6
Dear Urban OR Students:1. There is an important typo in the statement of Problem 6.6
(Problem 1 of the Problem Set). The RHS of the second constraint in
STEP 2 should
be -P(j), not -P(i).
2. Problem 2 of the Problem Set asks you to solve EXERCISE 6.7, NOT Problem 6.7. This exercise is in the text itself, in Section 6.5.4. We did not have time to talk about "center problems" in the lecture and this is why you should read the section before doing the exercise.
Thanks,
Amedeo Odoni
Thanks again,
Amedeo
