Please evaluate the course!

Dear all,

Thanks to the 50% who have evaluated the course! For the rest, we hope you submit an evaluation so we can make the class even better in the future. I really enjoyed working with all of you and hope that you got as much out of the course as I did.

Thanks again,
Hannah

For Monday!

Hi all,

I'm really looking forward to seeing your presentations on Monday! Please send me your slides by Monday at 10 AM and I will put them all together. I will also devise a schedule of presenters. If you have any preferences, let me know and I will try to accommodate them.

Edited DB/E+ tutorial

Hi all,

I have just added a new version of the tutorial to stellar. It is much more detailed in the E+ section, which will help once you get your files back from me. I will be editing the files and sending them back over the next day or so -- the earlier you send me an IDF, the faster you get it back!

Please let me know if you have a specific problem with DB or E+.

Last program(s)!

Hi all,

As you know, I will be doing a demonstration of the last programs for 4.411 on Monday. It would be very helpful if you can install the software, which is not finicky at all, for that class. You will need two programs, which work both on VMware or a PC:

1. Design Builder. http://www.designbuilder.co.uk/. You must create an account in the lower left of the page to download the 30 day trial of their most current release. This will be under Downloads --> software --> current release, after you have logged in.

2. Energy Plus. http://apps1.eere.energy.gov/buildings/energyplus. The link to download is on that page.

In addition, the set of 4 wind tunnel videos have been uploaded to my public folder and can be accessed here: http://web.mit.edu/hrd/Public/.

Have a good week-end!

Important class information; please read!

Hi all,

Four very important notes.

1. The following groups still have either one or both of our light meters. These MUST be returned on Monday in class.

Leoni, Madja and Lauren - both light meters
Zach, Ali and Kimee - the light meter used for testing
Iman and Devon - both light meters
Sean - the first light meter. You may keep the light meter used for testing for now to finish your experiments
Jenny and Sharon - the light meter used for testing

2. BY FRIDAY you must try to install Coolvent, based on the directions I have posted. Test to make sure it is working by following the instructions below. If you cannot get it to work, E-MAIL ME ASAP and we will figure out a time to meet. I will be doing a tutorial in class on Monday and it would be extremely helpful to bring your laptop and have the program running.

- double click on the exec file and click run
- go to the 'main inputs' tab
- change the building type to 'chimney type'
- go to the 'thermal comfort models' tab
- click 'calculate inputs' in the lower right
- click 'yes' and then 'run'
- if the command window opens and takes a bit of time to run, it is probably working
- also click 'visualize results' after the command window closes and make sure the visualization of the building works

3. BY FRIDAY, e-mail Professor Norford the MAC address of your computer following the directions below. This is so we can get the program Phoenics for you. The program will be stand-alone and does not require connection to an MIT server.

For those of you using a Windows machine, for which the program is written, please open a command window from the start menu (i.e., select "run" then type cmd) and then type ipconfig -all. You should have one for ethernet connections and may likely have one for wireless as well. They are labeled “physical address” under a heading such as “Ethernet adapter local area connection”.

If you use a Mac, please provide the same numbers, obtained by the same query under VMWARE. In addition, provide physical addresses for ethernet and wireless obtained on the Mac side. In this case, go to system preferences | network and for both airport and ethernet click advanced.

4. I have the wind tunnel video on my flashdrive. It opens in quicktime. If you would like to copy it to your computer, I will bring it to class on Monday. If you would like to copy it before Monday, feel free to e-mail me and make an appointment to come by my desk.

Thanks,
Hannah
