5.35 Intro to Experimental Chemistry Lab Open to Freshmen

Dear Class,

The Chemistry Department invites you to explore the “hands-on” side of chemistry by enrolling in 5.35 this coming spring.  5.35 Introduction to Experimental Chemistry is the beginning of a laboratory curriculum sequence required of all Course V majors.  5.35 modules will introduce students to modern spectroscopy techniques that reveal a variety of molecular and biomolecular properties  (module 1), synthesis of inorganic coordination compounds and reaction kinetics (module 2) and the polymerization of electroluminescent polymers that will be used to construct working organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) (module 3).

If you have completed 5.111 or 5.112, you are eligible to enroll in 5.35 Module 1 for 4 units or 5.35 Modules 1 and 2 for 8 units.  For those of you who will be taking 5.12 in the spring, you will be able to enroll in Modules 1, 2 and 3 for 12 units of 5.35.

A detailed description of the URIECA sequence is given at http://web.mit.edu/chemistry/www/academic/urieca.html .   The enrollment in these modules is limited to 35 students.  In the spring semester, preference is given to freshmen.   For more information, contact Ms. Melinda Cerny, Assistant Director of Chemical Education at cerny@mit.edu , 3-0909, and 2-204.
