12.012/12.444 MatLab Stats Rgressn Sgnl Proc
Fall 2013
Instructors: Thomas A Herring, F Dale Morgan, Sai Ravela
TAs: Abdulaziz AlMuhaidib, Alan Richardson, Yuval Tal
Lecture: TR11-12.30 (54-1623)
Aims:
This class is aimed at introducing the basic tools needed for
data analysis and interpretation in the Geosciences. The course is
composed of four, independent but related modules, targeted at
introducing students to the basic concepts and applications of the
four units. The subject areas covered in each topic are:
Matlab: Principles and practice in its uses, script and function
modules, basic approaches to solving problems, cell and debug
options, guidelines to efficient codes in terms of memory use and
vector formulations, introduction to graphics and toolboxes.
Regression: Basic least squares and algorithms applicable to
regression, inversion and parameter estimation, statistics of
derived quantities from inversion results, data influence and the
design of experiments.
Statistics: Correlation, means, dispersion, precision, accuracy,
distributions, central limit theorem, skewness, probability,
Chi-Square and other common distributions used in hypothesis
testing.
Signal Processing: Analog and digital signals, Z-transform, Fourier
series, fast Fourier transforms, spectral analysis leakage and
bias, digital filtering.

Clarification Q7 Matlab PSET
One clarification for question 7 of the Matlab PSET. The fprintf statement in the "for" loop should be converted to vector form (i.e., written as one line of code with no for loop) but for the timing tests, the fprintf's should be commented out (or an if to stop them executing). You could test the effects of this. It is likely that the times will be dominated by the fprintf statements.Announced on 02 October 2013 1:03 p.m. by Thomas A Herring
