Schmidt-MacArthur Fellowship
15.366:Thought you all may be interested in the following fellowship:
MIT has recently partnered with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation
to take part in the Schmidt-MacArthur Fellowship, a graduate
fellowship on the circular economy for design, engineering and
business students. The official press release can be found here.
The circular economy refers to an industrial economy that is
restorative by intention; aims to rely on renewable energy;
minimizes, tracks, and hopefully eliminates the use of toxic
chemicals; and eradicates waste through careful design. More
information on the circular economy can be found here. Case studies
on the circular economy can be found here.
The ODGE (Office of the Dean for Graduate Education) will nominate
up to ten graduate students to apply to this opportunity. Please
distribute the below and attached information to your graduate
students as you see fit.
What: The Schmidt-MacArthur Fellowship is a fellowship program for
graduate students and their faculty mentors on creative and
innovative thinking around the circular economy. The program takes
a multi-disciplinary approach with input across design, engineering
and business. It is developed and run in partnership with a Core
Team of three leading UK academic institutions – Cranfield
University, Imperial College London and London Business School.
-Circular Economy Innovation Project: During the Fellowship,
students undertake their chosen Circular Economy Innovation
Project, as part of their graduate study – focusing on creative and
innovative models, concepts and tools – which contributes towards
the acceleration to the circular economy.
- Summer School: A key element of the program is an all-expenses
paid, intensive week-long summer school for students and their
faculty mentor at Cransfield University in the UK from June 23-27,
2014. Faculty mentors must commit to attend the summer school (all
expenses paid) with the applicant to be eligible for this
fellowship. During the summer school week they interact with the
circular economy as an innovation framework, through workshops,
lectures and challenge-based tasks, placing particular emphasis on
developing a systems thinking perspective to addressing
challenges.
- CE100 Annual Summit: As part of the week long summer school mentioned above participants have the opportunity to network with the Foundation’s flagship business program, CE100, at their Annual Summit, which takes place during the same week at the Royal Institution of Great Britain in London.

Application task: The initial application task takes the form of a 90 second audio-visual presentation that will need to be uploaded through the fellowship’s online application process by the deadline. The task involves two parts. The first is a fixed question, which all applicants must address in their presentation. In the second part applicants can choose from one of two questions.
Part 1: How might the circular economy shape the future?
Part 2: What aspect of the circular economy intrigues you most, and
why?
Or
How do you believe that your Circular Economy Innovation Project
might support the evolution to a circular economy?
Each part should be dealt with separately and there should be a
clear and obvious delineation between your responses to each. More
information on the application task and technical requirements can
be found here or in the attachments to this email.
Deadline (Internal Competition Application): Nomination packages
should be sent by February 3, 2014 at 5pm electronically to ODGE
