Lab 2 Assignment Posted
Dear Class,I hope you feel good about Midterm 2 and enjoy the long weekend! (Remember that Monday is Veteran's Day, so there is no class.)
I have just posted both the Lab 1 solutions and the assignment for Lab 2. The pre-lab assignment is due Monday, November 18th, and the labs sessions will start the following day, Nov. 19th.
Recommendations: Please make sure to go through the solutions for Lab 1 before doing the Lab 2 pre-lab assignment. Also, same deal as last time: please check your work with your peers to make sure you didn't make any computational errors and are indeed designing a controller for the correct system! However, as you have now learned, the more controllers your group designs, the easier it is to find one that works.
Also(!): The pre-lab assignment requires that you design a linear quadratic estimator (LQE) to go along with the LQR you will also be designing for pitch control. Sertac will be covering LQE in class on Wednesday, but, if you want to get a head start on the assignment, I will also be posting material on the LQE sometime this weekend, so stay tuned….
Best,
Noele

Lab 1 Schedule/ Control Design Resource
Hi, Class. Here is the lab schedule for next week by group.
Group 1 (Henna, Morganne, Elizabeth, Lindsay, Mia): Thursday, 6-8PM and 8-10PM
Group 2 (Patrick, Boris, James, Todd): Wednesday, 3-5PM and Thursday, 6-8PM
Group 3 (Niek, Aaron, Shayegan): Wednesday, 1-3PM and 3-5PM
Group 4 (Bruno, Drew, Chris, Mike): Tuesday, 6-8PM and 8-10PM
Group 5 (Vaibhav, Ankit, Duncan, Elaheh): Tuesday, 6-8PM and Friday, 3-5PM
Please let me know as soon as you can if there are any problems with this schedule.
Also, I would like to share with you my favorite online reference for control theory: http://ctms.engin.umich.edu/CTMS/
For some guidance on frequency domain control design, I highly recommend going through some of the tutorials in the site's Control: Frequency section. There are some very nice examples on how to design controllers to meet various system specifications, and they also show how to take advantage of MATLAB's sisotool.
Another recommendation: as you are designing your controllers, keep in mind how the specifications correspond to system performance. For example, what determines overshoot? Rising time? Settling time? This knowledge will make it a whole lot easier to tweak your controller to improve performance.
Please do not hesitate to use Piazza or to email me with any questions that you have.
Have a good weekend.
Best,
Noele

Recitation 3 Notes Posted; Interpreting Zeros
Hi, Class.Sorry I did not put yesterday's recitation notes up earlier. They are online now.
Also, a number of you have been asking me about interpreting zeros. We will be covering this in detail very soon, but, if you want some quick intuition, I suggest taking a look at Astrom & Murray (http://www.cds.caltech.edu/~murray/amwiki/) pgs. 239-240 and problem 8.4 on page 263 (from Ch.8).
Have a good weekend.

Recitation 2 Notes Posted
Hello, All.I have just put today's recitation notes + Matlab file on Stellar. As you will notice, the example problem on sketching Bode plots is from a website. If you want more practice, check out that website; it has a number of other examples. The Matlab file explores second-order systems written in canonical form and hopefully gives a bit of intuition for what physically the Bode plot represents.
Have a good weekend!
Cheers,
Noele
