ARTICLES ON RESERVE
Dear Andes Students:
As I announced in class on Tuesday night, 3 December, I will place on reserve articles for some students that may be helpful in constructing their term papers.
I have already contacted those students for whom articles will be placed on reserve.
THE ARTICLES I HAVE PLACED ON RESERVE ARE IN INDIVIDUAL FILE FOLDERS. EACH FILE FOLDER IS IDENTIFIED WITH THE NAME(s) OF THE STUDENT(s) FOR WHOM THE FOLDER HAS BEEN PREPARED.
THESE FILE FOLDERS ARE IN GREEN FILE BOXES. THE FILE BOXES WILL BE ON THE RESERVE SHELVES IN HAYDEN LIBRARY. TO ACCESS YOUR FOLDER, SIMPLY ASK THE LIBRARIAN AT THE FRONT DESK FOR YOUR FOLDER WHICH IS IN ONE OF THE 3.982 GREEN FILE BOXES ON RESERVE.
I EXPECT TO BRING THE FILE BOXES TO HAYDEN LIBRARY ON THURSDAY MORNING. YOUR FOLDER SHOULD BE AVAILABLE EARLY ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON OR PERHAPS SOONER.
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT ALL THE ARTICLES I HAVE PLACED ON RESERVE FOR YOU ARE FROM MY PERSONAL LIBRARY. YOU MAY NOT HIGHLIGHT ANY OF THE TEXT OR UNDERLINE ANY TEXT. THE FOLDERS ARE FOR LIBRARY USE ONLY. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BORROW THEM FOR USE OUTSIDE OF THE LIBRARY.
I EXPECT TO RECEIVE THE ARTICLES AT THE END OF THE TERM IN THE SAME EXCELLENT CONDITION AS THAT IN WHICH I LEFT THEM FOR YOU.

TERM PAPER OUTLINES DUE ON 26 NOVEMBER
Dear Andes students:
REMINDER
Your term paper outlines -- carefully organized and edited -- are to be handed in in class on Tuesday, 26 November.
Be sure that your outline has a subject heading and that it begins with a brief paragraph that discusses the intent of the paper.
Once I have reviewed your paper topics and outlines, I will be in a better position to determine if I can be helpful with supplementary reading material that pertains to your subject.
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO MEET WITH ME IF YOU WISH TO DISCUSS YOUR PAPER AND HOW IT IS PROGRESSING.

MIDTERM EXAM AND OTHER DEADLINES
Dear Andes students:
Important items coming up soon
MIDTERM EXAM
You will take the midterm exam on Tuesday, 5 November (tomorrow) during our usual class time.
PLEASE BE ON TIME. The first half hour of the exam is a slide identification quiz. Everyone must be present in class in order for me to show the slides. I cannot show slides to students who arrive late. It is really important that everyone make a special effort to arrive in class on time.
TERM PAPER OUTLINES DUE ON TUES. 12 NOVEMBER
Thus far, only one student has made an appointment with me to discuss the term paper topic, even though many of you handed in a list of 2-3 one-word topics in class last week. The term paper is expected to be 12-15 pages long and illustrated appropriately. I cannot help you with your topic at the eleventh hour. If you need to discuss your topic with me, you need to make an appointment to see me THIS WEEK. The outline should reflect the amount of reading you have done on your topic and your thoughts on how best to structure the paper. I will distribute a 'model outline' in class tomorrow so that you will have a sense of how detailed and thorough your outline should be. YOUR TERM PAPER IS A MAJOR PART OF THIS COURSE. IT NEEDS TO BE DESIGNED AND WRITTEN WITH CARE.
THE MARITIME FOUNDATIONS OF ANDEAN CIVILIZATION
The class syllabus indicates that on Tuesday, 12 November we are scheduled to discuss the Andean Initial Period. In order to do so, you will have had to read Michael Moseley's short but extremely important book, The Maritime Foundations of Andean Civilization. I have placed several copies of the book on our class Reserve in the Hayden Library. I will postpone discussion of the Moseley book until the following Tuesday, 19 November, by which date you must have read the Moseley book. I will assign small groups of students issues raised by Moseley's book which each group will be expected to discuss in class on 19 November.
