6.867  Machine Learning

Fall 2013

Instructor: Tommi S Jaakkola

TAs: Georgiana Andreea Gane, Noel Hollingsworth, David Matthew Rosen

Lecture:  TR9.30-11  (54-100)

Information:

Machine learning is about design, analysis, and the application of computer programs that learn from experience. The goal of learning is prediction, decision making, or control. This graduate subject will cover many key concepts, techniques, and algorithms in machine learning, emphasizing methods that are broadly useful across engineering and sciences. We begin with topics such as support vector machines and end up with more recent topics such as non-parametric generative models. The course aims to give the students insights and some intuition for the methods and algorithms as well as a bit more formal understanding of why and when they work. The underlying theme in the course is statistical inference as it provides the foundation for most of the methods covered.
