office hour today canceled

Hi class,

I have to cancel the office hour today since I am feeling under the weather. Roberto will have office hour next Monday (10-11:30am), in the Ippen Room (48-311). He will also have graded homework 8, 9, and 10 for you to pick up. I will release solution to pset #10 by Saturday so you will have all the materials to study.

Best of luck on the final! Don't forget to fill out the teaching evaluations :)

Ruby

Wavelet question

Hello class

There was a question after the class today on how to choose the thresholds on the details coefficients for de-noising. There are different methods to select threshold, as you can see on the De-noising window. In the noisy doppler example, we chose a fixed form threshold method. This gives a threshold of stddev_noise*sqrt(2*ln(N)), where stddev_noise is the standard deviation of noise, and N is the length of the signal. The value of sqrt(2*ln(N)) gives minimum of the maximum mean square error. In our case, a white noise with stddev_noise=1 was used. So the threshold was sqrt(2*log(1000)) = 3.72.

We can also see it differently in our case: since we know that there are no details in the original signal at late time (frequencies decreasing with time in the doppler signal), we choose a threshold window that encompasses the late time in detail signal entirely.

The lecture note is uploaded on the Stellar.
