22.11 PSet 4 Graded and Solution Available
Dear 22.11 Class,
The pset 4 have been graded. For electronic submissions, it should have been waiting for you in your unique pset collection folder, while for hard copies, you will receive on 22.12 class this Thursday.
Also, the solution of pset 4 is available at stellar. Please note that the grading for the beta/gamma decay is a little harsh. The decay spin-parity assignment are a few of rules , so please get down to the bottom to make sure to get full score in this type of problem.
For beta decay, please also include (Gamow-Teller or Fermi) type. Please note that the angular momentum conservation is quantum mechanical operator sum instead of algebraic sum, hence for given L, there could still be different possible S. S=0 or 1 which the total spin of the product fermions. Please also note that lowest L is enough for discucssion, yet higher L value is not excluded by angular momentum conservation and "allowed" with neglegible probability. Lowest L is enough for the exam, while still there could be 2 possible S or only 1 possible S value.
For gamma decay, for completeness, please indicate the type (E1, M2, etc) for each mode. There are much to be said on these issues to go deeper, but for the finals please memorize the rules and try to count no more, no less. Please see solution for the terminology.
Sincerely,
