24.900  Introduction to Linguistics

Fall 2014

Instructors: Adam Albright, Atissa Banuazizi, Nora A. L Jackson, Janis Melvold

TAs: Adam Albright, Kenyon Garrett Branan, Sudheer Kolachina, Lilla Magyar, Paul Pierre Marty, Michelle Yuan, Olivia M Murton

Lecture:  MW1-2.30  (4-270)

Information:

This course will provide some answers to basic questions about the nature of human language. Throughout the semester, we will be examining a number of ways in which human language is a complex but law-governed mental system.

During the first two-thirds of the semester, we will examine various aspects of linguistic structure: the structure of words (morphology), the organization of sounds (phonetics, phonology), word order (syntax), and the meaning of sentences (semantics). You will use what you learn to investigate the structure of a language that is unfamiliar to you. We will then look at how linguistic structure influences and is affected by language transmission: how is language acquired? how do languages change over time? how do new dialects and languages arise?

Optional review sessions

Hi all,
Thanks for your responses-- the general preference was for optional review sessions to be either soon or close to the day of the final, so we'll plan on having the following two sessions: one TOMORROW (pending room availability), and one the night before the final:

Review session 1: Thurs 12/11 2-4pm (pending room availability)
Review session 2: Tues 12/16 7-9pm

We will also have office hours between now and the final, possibly extended or spread out a bit so that if you can't make one of the review sessions, or have questions in between, we will be available. Those will be posted in a separate announcement, once I've confirmed the details.

Review session, and subject evaluations

Hi all,
Here is a link to the subject evaluations, and also to a poll about times for review sessions before the final. Please take a moment to click on both of them to fill them out!

1) Subject evaluations: please do take a moment to fill this out! I'll wrap things up early on Wed, so that you can spend the time filling it out! (You could either bring an electronic device and do it then, or you could do it before then when you have a moment, and leave early on Wed)

2) Here's a poll about possible times for review sessions. Please fill it out, to maximize chances that they'll be scheduled at a time when you can attend!
