The workshop will center on the ideation and prototyping of a Gustav Metger project to be realized in Mexico City in 2015. The project is a self-destructive 10 year monument which challenges the visitor about themes of extinction, the auto-destructive/creative process of humans, living forms, and cosmological events, and how that relates to our existences. It will also explore themes of technology and its implications for the future of nature and the human species in regard to the environment, climate change, architecture, art, humanity, biodiversity, consciousness, natural resources, science, technology, food, sustainability, amongst other topics. In addition, the space will act as an educational center for children and youth in the communities around the site. We will explore how these messages can reach a wider audience with various media.

The workshop will include readings, guest lecturers, and audiovisual material that will encourage free-flowing discussions on the materials, shapes, art works, educational design for children and youth, and communication strategies to engage and attract a wider audience to the space. The ideas put forth will be turned into physical fabrications and mixed media materializations with the help of ACT’s expert media and fabrication associates.

Students’ creations and ideas will be displayed at a symposium on the dome(s) in December, which will bring together a multi-disciplinary group to further discuss the creation of the structures.

IEL Training

Hi all,

If you are interested in using the IEL at any time during the rest of the semester, you will have to participate in a training. Please respond to this doodle poll with your available times by Monday. We will chose the best time for training and will schedule a second session if needed. If none of these dates work, please note in the comments section and we can revise the times.

Friday's outside lecturer, etc.

Dear class,

Hope you are all well. I would like to let you know that this Friday we will have a visitor who will talk to us about his work on extinction. His name is Javier Anguera Phipps, editor of contemporary culture index and ACT Research Affiliate (RA); he will be discussing the three readings posted on Stellar. They are all short and I believe you will find them interesting and relevant to our exploration.

Also, wanted to remind you that you must upload all of your documentation to date onto the blog. I only have a few written submissions from you. They are important documents so please upload or send them to me and Rena as soon as possible.

Lastly, we are NOT meeting at our usual class. We will be at De Roth which is to the left of the elevators (if you take them to ACT).

Best,

Gabriel

Midreview

Hello Everyone,

As we approach the mid point of the workshop we need to begin to define our ideas and works.

The mid-term project, due Oct 24, will be comprised of the following:

- 5 minute presentation of your idea accompanied by at least one materialization. Presentation will be followed by a 10 min. critique.
- A one page theoretic explanation of your project grounded in the ideas discussed during the workshop. This must be uploaded before the 24th to allow for review prior to the presentation. If your project is purely theoretical then you must turn in (upload) a 1,000 word paper on your research and why it is relevant to the project. Be prepared to defend your ideas and works.
o Project must be relevant within the dome(s) project
o Project must include at least one way in which you would work with youth to express the idea you are trying to convey. (lesson plan, tour, new media outreach proposal, etc.)
- Your project progression must be on the blog by review date.
o Please include photographs, videos and all other relevant documentation in your post.

Do not hesitate to contact me or Rena at any time before the review.

Best,

Gabriel

New equipment and media support resource

A new email list has been created for responses to your equipment and media support questions and requests.

act-checkout@mit.edu

Do NOT email Madeleine any longer, as she will not be able to respond as quickly as the list.

The best place to request and the only place to pick up equipment is still during equipment checkout hours.

Thank you!
