5.70/10.546  Statistical Thermodynamics

Fall 2014

Instructor: Adam P. Willard

TA: Sucheol Shin

Lecture:  MW8.30-10  (4-231)

Subject Description:

Develops classical equilibrium statistical mechanical concepts for application to chemical physics problems. Basic concepts of ensemble theory formulated on the basis of thermodynamic fluctuations. Examples of applications include Ising models, lattice models of binding, ionic and non-ionic solutions, liquid theory, polymer and protein conformations, phase transition, and pattern formation. Introduces computational techniques with examples of liquid and polymer simulations.

PS 3 and associated c++ code

I've added PS 3 to the website. The final problem asks you to explore a random polymer chain with a numerical simulation. The code you will need "random_walk.cc" and the associated input file "rw_input.dat" has been posted to the course website. I will write a primer on the code, how to use and compile it by the end of tomorrow.

(Partial) Solutions to P Set #2 is posted

Hi Class,

I have just posted the solutions to the last problem set except for the problem 3, which part might be waited by most of you. I still have to write up the remaining part, but hope it to be done by tonight so that some of you may glance at it next morning before the exam starts... sorry for the late work!

Best,

Solution to PSet#1 has been re-posted.

Hi folks,

I have just re-posted the new version of solution to the problem set 1. There was a small error in the calculation of fourth moment in part a of problem 1 in the older handwritten version. I will try to complete the solution to pset#2 before the evening of Sunday. Sorry to you all for this late work.
