Fall 2014

This course is an introduction to computational techniques for the simulation of a large variety of engineering and physical systems. Applications are drawn from aerospace, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering, biology, and materials science. Topics include mathematical formulations (techniques for automatic assembly of mathematical problems from physics' principles); sparse, direct and iterative solution techniques for linear systems; Newton methods for nonlinear problems; discretization methods for ordinary, time-periodic and partial differential equations; accelerated methods for integral equations; techniques for automatic generation of compact dynamical system models and model order reduction.

HW6 Final Submission Date

Dear All,

Since there may be some confusion regarding the dates that HW6 is due let me clarify.

1) The formal due date for HW6 is Wednesday 26th November

2) If you cannot make the formal deadline, then you may submit it on Monday 1st December. The members of the teams that submit it on Monday 1st Dec. will NOT receive any late penalty for HW6 regardless of how many extensions they have already used.

3) The absolutely LAST day to submit HW6 is Wednesday 3rd December. The members of the teams that submit it on this day will not receive a penalty only IF they have not used all three penalty free extensions.

Finally, in terms of the HW6 submission. All team members should upload on Stellar a copy of their common report and code they have used in accordance with the aforementioned dates. Since tomorrow's class is canceled, each team that submits its HW6 on Wed. 26th Nov or on Dec 1st should print a hard copy of their report and hand it in before the beginning of class on Dec 1st.

I wish you all a good Thanksgiving

George

HW6 is updated

Hi everyone,

After receiving multiple comments and questions about the boundary conditions for HW6, we have come up with an updated version that allows you to handle them properly. Note that there are a few more changes, and make sure to go through it carefully. Due to these additions, we are making 1.1.4 optional. So you can have it ready by the due date, which is right before thanksgiving.

Feel free to post questions on Piazza or stop by the office hours.

One last update on PS#5

Hi everybody,

Some people realized that the system in Problem 3 on PS#5 cannot settle into a steady state. We have modified it, and now you shouldn't have any problems. The modification is a simple one, so you only need to change a few lines if you have already written your code.

Oscillator Lecture

An updated version of the slides that Prof. White presented during
the last lecture is now available on Stellar. This updated
presentation contains minor modifications so that the notations
used in the formulas are more consistent.
