Information:

Who Should Take 8.04:

8.04 is a first introduction to quantum mechanics aimed at students with a good grasp of Newtonian mechanics, E&M and waves at the level of 8.01, 8.02 and 8.03. While the topic is not hard, developing an intuition for quantum phenomena demands concerted effort.

Prerequisites:

Students registering for 8.04 must have completed 8.03 (or 6.013) and 18.03 (or 18.034) with grades of C or higher. Exceptions to this policy will require the explicit permission of Prof. Vogelsberger before the end of the first week of classes.

Grading:

Grades can be viewed using the secure Gradebook link (sidebar). The final grade for the course is based on the following contributions:

20% problem sets
20% first mid-term
25% second mid-term
35% final

Your worst pset will be dropped. Psets are due at 5pm every Tuesday, in the usual boxes on the 3rd floor junction of Buildings 8 and 16.

Problem Set 10

Dear Class,

Problem Set 10 is now available on Stellar. Since most people have travel plans, this pset will be due next Friday (5th Dec) at 5pm.

This pset is longer than usual, but only the scores of the first four are counted. The rest are exercises, mostly concerning hydrogen atoms, and will be doable after the last few lectures. They are also important, and you should really look at them and try them yourself. They are also examinable.

Enjoy the Thanksgiving break!

Pset 7 clarification for Question 3

Dear Class,

Here is a clarification that the ladder operators in question 3 is defined in a slightly different way than the ones in class, which may result in different overall prefactors. I have included the definition in the updated pset file. Please be careful.

Also a gentle reminder that the midterm 1 papers will be returned tomorrow during the recitation.

Best,
Elton
