Announcements for the week before the Final

Your final exam is

Tues. Dec. 16, 1:30-4:30pm, in room 4-153 .

It will cover material from the entire course. Here are some related announcements:

  • The final exam from 2012 and 2013 as well as some Practice Problems for the final have been posted. Solutions will be posted by the end of this week.
  • Course review by Iain, Thursday Dec.11 starting at 7:30pm in 26-168. It will cover material done after the midterm. See the posted midterm review notes for a review of earlier materials.
  • Aditya will hold an optional office hours / problem solving session on Friday Dec.12 from 1-2pm in your usual section room, 26-322
  • Iain will hold extra office hours Monday Dec.15 from 12:30-2:30pm in or around 6-401.
  • Aditya will hold extra office hours later in the day Monday Dec. 15 from 4:00-6:00pm in or near 6-416.

Another Mathematica Notebook Posted

I have posted another mathematica notebook which plots phase space trajectories for the damped nonlinear pendulum, an example that we discussed in our first lecture on nonlinear dynamics. If you decide to plot trajectories using mathematics for Pset10, 2(d) then this code provides one example of how you could do it.

Problem Set #10 Posted (with a Mathematica Notebook)

Dear 8.09ers, The final problem set, Problem Set #10, is now posted, due on Friday Dec.5th. Also posted in the materials is a mathematica notebook on the logistical map that you can use for one of the problems.

Nov.10-14 Schedule

Tomorrow in lecture we will discuss applications of viscous fluids. In section this Friday you will discuss ideal fluids and the material relevant for this weeks problem set, which includes also questions on perturbation theory.

Next week, Nov.10-14, I am traveling. Aditya will be available for office hours on Monday from 11:30am-12:30pm in my place (your Pset#7 is due on Wed). Tuesday is a student holiday, so you have no lecture. Thursday, Nov. 13, Aditya will hold the makeup section during our regular lecture slot in room 66-160. You will then have your regular section with him on Friday Nov.14. The material for discussion in section this week is viscous fluids. The problem set #8 which includes questions on both ideal and viscous fluids, is due the following Monday Nov. 17 (I will have office hours that day as usual).
