December 7 Class Materials on Stellar

Hi Class,

I have posted the following materials for you to review for Monday under the Dec 7 class session on stellar:

1. A slide deck compiling Detroit information from our classes over the semester. An early slide lists discussion questions to think about and come ready to discuss  on Monday.
2. Two readings from early in the term--a memo I prepared in the finance system in 2010 with an update from 2014 and . A Chicago Fed article and summary of a forum on resources to finace small businesses in Detroit
3. As prompted by several of the questions, your work on projects in Detroit is another lens into the finance system,  Pleae refelct on what your experience and analysis on these projects reveals about the city's development finance system and potential ways to improve it.

One option for this class is to prepare a summary of the notes from our discussion and share with our clients and others in Detroit.  Plesae let me know if anyone would like to volunter to take notes and prepare a summary for distribution.

Thanks,
Karl

Readings for November 18

Hi Class,

Two of the readings for tomorrow assess small business development and credit needs:  Maude Toussaint-Comeau and Robin Newberger analyze bank branches and lending in Detroit while Sevron, Fairlie, Rastello and Seely look at credit and small business support programs in NYC.  These two studies take very different methodical approaches and yield different types of information.  When reading them for class tomorrow, consider: (1) the type of information each study generates and how useful it is in desiging policies and programs to address small business financing gaps; and (2) what does each study suggest about effective interventions for each city?
