Chemistry grades on WEBSIS

Your chemistry grades should be made available via WEBSIS by December 23rd.  None of the chemistry staff will be able to give you your grade via email.
If you are a freshman, your grade will be a “P” for pass or there will be no credit (if you did not pass the class). To find out your hidden grade, you must meet with your freshmen advisor during IAP. This is an opportunity to review your term with your advisor.

If you are an upperclassman, your letter grade will be seen on WEBSIS.

If you would like to see your final exam in chemistry, you will need to make an appointment with Patti Christie (patti@mit.edu) starting Monday January 25th. You will have until Friday February 12th to see your exam.
Have a great holiday break!

We have incentives for you to fill in the end of term evaluations

The 5.112 staff and the chemistry department really appreciate the students in 5.112 filling out the end of term evaluations.
You received an email yesterday announcing the beginning of the evaluation period.
The fall 2015 end-of-term subject evaluations ( http://web.mit.edu/subjectevaluation/evaluate.html) opened today. You will have until Monday, December 14 at 9 AM to complete their surveys.
It is important to note that we do not see the results of the surveys until January (way after the grades have been submitted), so honesty is appreciated. We especially find comments useful to continue to develope the course content.

To convince you of the importance of filling in these evaluations we have incentives:
If 75 % of the class fill in the evaluation, we will put one of the problems from the extra problems for the final exam on the final exam.
If 85 % of the class fill in the evaluation, we will put one of the problems from problem set #10 on the final exam ( in addition to the other problem).

Please take the time to fill out these evaluations.
Patti and the entire 5.112 staff

Interested in 5.301, Chemistry Laboratory Techniques? Read on!

Dear 5.111 and 5.112 Students,

We write to advise you on an important Chemistry Lab experience that will run during IAP January 2016: 5.301, Chemistry Laboratory Techniques, a six credit course for freshmen only.

It’s been kept quiet because enrollment is limited to only 12 selected students.

The course guarantees each participant a UROP in the Chemistry Department as early as spring 2016.

The course teaches all the basic practical lab techniques including recrystallization, distillation, column chromatography, and protein assays and ends with a complex synthesis of a penicillin antibiotic followed by testing on live bacteria.

Apply now at:

http://tinyurl.com/5301lab

Deadline is Tuesday, November 24, Midnight

Attached is a link to actual video clips on the course, which feature students previously enrolled:

This is an exciting opportunity you won’t want to pass by. Looking forward to seeing you in January 2016. In the meantime, wishing you best of luck with 5.111 and 5.112.
