Professor: Joseph A Paradiso

TAs: Evan F Lynch, David Bradford Ramsay, Spencer Franklin Russell

Lecture:  W2-4  (E14-493)

Information:

Explores the ways in which electronic music is controlled and performed. A solid historical perspective is presented, tracing the development of various families of electronic musical controllers and instruments from their genesis in the late 1800s onwards. Design principles and engineering detail are also given for various current and classic controllers. Evolving issues in the control of computer music for live performance and interactive installations are discussed, including computer mapping of sensor signals and transduced gesture onto sound, music, and other media. Many examples of controllers in performance will be presented and discussed/analyzed from both artistic and technical perspectives. Weekly reading assignments are given, and a final project or paper is required.

Reminder - Project Discussions in class tomorrow

Hi everybody. A quick reminder - please come prepared to discuss your project ideas in class tomorrow. A presentation from each team would be preferred - the degree of detail is up to you, but I'd like to hear what each team is planning to do, and we can devote a good chunk of class to discussion and project brainstorming/refinement as needed.

Thanks also to everybody who came to Movie Night last night - I enjoyed sharing those films with you and hope you all enjoyed going through two very different musical stories.

Reminder - Movie Night this coming Monday in 633 at 7 PM

A reminder - we're planning to have our 'movie night' in Room 633 at 7 PM on Monday Nov. 16 in the 6th floor theatre (633).  The plan now is a double feature - the Canturbury Scene documentary (featuring pioneering musicians who explored different kinds of sounds and composition in jazz/rock/psychedelia in early 70s England that fundamentally changed music and did much to establish 'edgy' prog) and the Raymond Scott documentary.  Let's see how we hold up.  I'll send an announcement to the Lab too.

Re. class, please formulate your project idea(s) and come to class on Weds ready to spend some minutes talking about them - a presentation would be a good idea.  Time runs quickly, and we need to get you all converged on projects now.
