Information:
Why take this course?
Do you have a business idea that could make the world a better
place?
Do you want to tackle big social and environmental problems with
the tools of the entrepreneur?
BAD NEWS, there are complex challenges in simultaneously solving
public and private problems, and trying to create value for
customers, investors, and society.
GOOD NEWS: There are tools to help you sharpen your problem
formulation, value proposition, business model, impact model, and
funding and hiring pitch. This course is taught through tool-driven
workshopping on ideas, and live cases with social entrepreneurs.
The course has shifted to the fall semester so that students can
launch from the course into winter/spring competitions like IDEAS,
Food/Ag, Water, Clean Energy, Inclusive Innovation, 100K, and
others.
What do we learn together?
Sustainability challenges - in physical domains like waste, water, food, energy, and mobility, as well as human capital domains like health and education - represent some of the most significant business opportunities of the century. Capturing these opportunities, however, will require significant innovation: not just in technologies and products, but also in processes, business models, and market infrastructures. What does it take to bring sustainability-oriented innovations (SOI) to market and to scale?
15.385 explores this question through a hands-on “studio” approach. We use a combination of readings, case discussions, lectures, and industry speakers to convey key concepts and tools. We immediately apply those tools to students’ own social innovation ideas to build practical knowledge and experience. We review the output of students’ work in class in an atmosphere of constructive challenge and support, building a community of social innovators.
Announcements
Guests on Monday, and no class Wednesday
On Monday we will have two guests in class. The first is Renske Lynde, the head of the Food System 6 accelerator. https://www.linkedin.com/in/renskelynde
http://www.foodsystem6.org/
The second is Dan Pullman, Managing Partner of Fresh Source
Capital, a food focused investment firm.
https://www.linkedin.com/in/danpullman/
https://www.freshsourcecapital.com/
The discussion will first look at accelerators like FS6 as a source of support for SOI in their own right. How should you as entrepreneurs be thinking about accelerators? We will then discuss the topic of blended finance that we lay out in the reading by Evan Kornbluh, me, and Sarah Kearney, applying the framework to examples that have come out of FS6 and the Fresh Source portfolio.
On Wednesday I regret to say I will be cancelling class - but have a happy early start to the Thanksgiving weekend!

Spreadsheet for Startup Impact Benchmark, Assignment 6
You may notice that we have Assignment 6 due next Wednesday the 15th. The assignment is to complete the Social Cost and Social Benefit boxes of the Business Model Canvas. But we would like you to do this in as rigorous a way as you are able. To that end, we have posted the spreadsheet tool that Ingo and I previewed in class on Wednesday. You can use this to help you conceptualize metrics and goals. We have also posted a one-slide guidance pdf to show you which aspects of the tool you should use - at this stage most of you will not be filling in the whole tool.https://learning-modules.mit.edu/materials/index.html?uuid=/course/15/fa17/15.385#materials

Reminder: Assignment due October 11
Just a reminder that Assignment 4 is due at 12PM on Wednesday October 11. Submit a PowerPoint, Google Slides, or PDF in your folder on our shared Google Drive. Elements are:1. Fill out the value proposition canvas
- Use your preliminary customer interviews to fill out the right side
- Use the prototype you began in the IDEO class on Monday, or a new prototype that you develop, to fill out the left
2. Fill out the business model canvas
- Rough sketch of something that might improve upon existing offerings
In class we will be discussing a more dynamic approach to business modeling, based in system dynamics. I have put a supplemental reading on Stellar that has some system dynamics primer material in it.

Emergency BnB cancelled, De-Ice still on
Amr cancelled at the last minute - I think their business is inundated right now with everything happening in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Houston, etc. We will, however, have De-Ice founder Alexander Bratianu. They are somewhat in stealth mode right now so not much pre-read for that session.https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexbratianubadea/

Change of plan for next Wednesday
In the syllabus, we had originally specified a case study for next Wednesday about d.light. Fortunately, we have been able to get two live cases instead. We will have Amr Arafa from EmergencyBnB for the first half of class, and Alexander Bratianu from De-Ice for the second half. They will present on their startups and present live challenges. We will share background information on Stellar via links for you to peruse.Announced on 22 September 2017 2:39 p.m. by Jason Jesurum Jay
