Chomsky in class on Thursday, April 26

Dear 24.900,

Just a reminder that next Thursday, 4/26, Professor Noam Chomsky will come to class and give a lecture about language.  PLEASE BE SURE TO ATTEND.  You can bring your friends, family, colleagues with you.  It is really a very special occasion to have him in class.

Also, Professor Adam Albright is conducting a phonology experiment investigating novel words in English.  If you are a native speaker of English and have 30 mins. to spare, Professor Albright would appreciate hearing  from you.  If you are interested, email him directly: novelwords@gmail.com.  He will pay you $5.00 for your time.

See you in class tomorrow.

Proposal revisons and Allison Adler's recitation sections

Dear 24.900,
Your proposals will be handed out in section tomorrow. Please revise them and resubmit them on April 24. This will count as the writing assignmnet for 4/24 as indicated ont he syllabus. The revised version of the proposal will be graded. For this revision, you need to not only follow the suggestions of your TA but you need to expand the proposal a bit as well. Use this as an opportunity to begin a first draft of your paper to some extent. You should be sure to make an appointment to meet with me or your recitation instructor either before you submit your revised proposal or when it is returned to you. We want to make sure that everyone is on target with respect to the final paper. Let me know if you have any questions.

Those of you who are in Allison's sections please go to the section that meets at the same time as yours; Ashtu meets at 12-1pm and David meets at
1-2pm. Both of these sections meet in 56-162.

Have a great weekend.

Quiz #2 Study Guide

Dear Students,

We were not planning on distributing a study guide for the quiz tomorrow, however several students have asked about it. The topics for the quiz were discussed in the last section as well as in lecture yesterday. In case you missed it, here it is again, with some study method suggestions:

-Detailed X-bar syntax and phrase structure. Make sure you know how to attach (multiple) complements, adjuncts, determiners, adjectives, etc. You should be able to draw trees and also describe in words what is going on in tree structures (e.g., "adjective phrases are specifiers of nouns, which means they attach as a sister to the N-bar level.")

-CP and IP structure, and wh-movement, in questions and embedded contexts. Go over the solution to long pset #2 and make sure it is clear to you. Test yourself by making up structurally similar examples and trying to draw the trees without looking back at the solution.

-Binding Theory, pronoun interpretation (e.g., principles A, B and C -- NOT "Bounding theory"). Make sure you know all 3 principles (and which is which!) and can explain in prose the reason for judgments of grammaticality involving pronouns, reflexives and full NPs.

-The basics of entailment and implicature relations between sentences.

-You might want to look over what it means for a context or lexical item to be downward- or upward-entailing, but you won't have to worry about the relation between these concepts and c-command.

Best,

Allison

Disregard notes on Thematic roles in 3/20, pt. lecture notes

Dear 24.900,

You will not be responsible for the notes on Thematic structure in the lecture notes for 3/20, pt. 2.  We will not cover this in class.  Feel free to read and ask us any questions, however.

Have a GREAT spring break.

See  you in a week.
