Topics in Feminist Political Philosophy: Gender, Objectification and Pornography
In this course we’ll focus on some topics to which feminist thinking has made important philosophical contributions: the controversial topic of pornography, in political and legal philosophy; and the related topic of objectification, which begins in moral philosophy but has connections with epistemology and politics. We’ll naturally look at the issue of gender along the way, and draw on a variety of philosophical resources, ranging from liberal and feminist political theory, to speech act theory. We’ll be looking at Rae and Sally’s own work in these areas, and that of others including Simone de Beauvoir, Catharine MacKinnon, Ronald Dworkin, and Martha Nussbaum.

Seminar readings 5/5
I'd like to discuss a draft of a paper I'm working on at the next seminar. I will be able to circulate the latest version of it later today, and will put it on the Stellar site. In the meantime, there are two papers there by Sarah-Jane Leslie on generics. The paper "The Original Sin of Cognition," is valuable background to what I'm trying to do and I'd like everyone to read it; her other more extensive paper on generics "Generics: Cognition and Acquisition" is there for those wanting further background on generics.

Seminar 4/28
I've posted some essays on the seminar website for our next seminar (4/28). There is one by Miranda Fricker "Powerlessness and Social Interpretation", one by Laura Schroeter and John Bigelow "Jackson's Classical Model of Meaning" and one by Laura and Francois Schroeter "A Third Way in Metaethics". It would be good if everyone could read the Fricker and one of the other two (on the crucial points I want to discuss they overlap, though the one on metaethics will probably be more useful to those interested in ethics, and the one on Jackson more useful to those who are interested in phil language and philosophical method more generally). See you next week.
