Women and Entrepreneurship Series
The aim of the Founders Lunch Series is to bring in one founder for Tuesdays from 11:45am-1pm to sit down with a small group of students and share their experiences as an entrepreneur in an informal and intimate setting; the discussion is meant to be interactive – questions are definitely welcome! It is also a great chance to network with the entrepreneurs as well as to meet classmates with similar interests.
This is a speaker series to allow the women’s community at MIT, especially graduate women, to hear first hand about the process and experience of starting, funding, and growing a business. MIT and the surrounding area is one of the most successful ecosytems for entrepreneurship in the world, but women are consistently underrepresented, as they are around the country; this series will provide some role models and connections.
1) February 16: Getting Started – finding the idea and the team with a focus on refining the innovation and the business models and looking for early sources of funding.
Bettina Hein, SM ’07 – Founder and CEO
, Pixability. Bettina founded Pixability to help
entrepreneurs and small businesses tell their story with video and
win more customers in the process. Bettina also co-founded
Swiss-based speech technology specialist SVOX AG and led the
venture-backed software company to profitability. In 1996, Bettina
was the initiator of the START (
http://startglobal.org
),
which encourages entrepreneurship among university students.
(11:45am-1pm, E51-393)
2) March 2: Managing Growth – putting in the systems and the leadership to allow the company to develop and scale. Creative use of external contract resources and internal staff are needed in all growing businesses but are often especially required for bio-related organizations.
Lydia Villa-Komaroff, PhD ’75 – Chief Scientific Officer
Cytonome/ST, LLC. Lydia is currently serving on the National
Academies of Science and National Academy of Engineering Committee
on Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine. Prior to her
current position, Dr. Villa-Komaroff served as CEO of Cytonome,
Inc., Vice President for Research at Northwestern University, VP
for Research and COO of the Whitehead Institute, and on-executive
Chair of the Board of Directors of TKT. (11:45am-1pm,
E51-063)
3) March 9: Exits and Next Steps – how to build an exit plan, identify acquirers, and work through a staff transition plan. Exits require looking beyond the first business to see if there is a second and working through work / life balance choices.
Janet Kraus is a serial entrepreneur and currently an
Entrepreneur in Residence at the Harvard Business School. Janet
co-founded Circles, the largest provider of concierge services,
with Kathy Sherbrooke in 1997 and sold it to Sodexo in 2007.
Simultaneous with the sale of Circles, Janet spun out Spire, an
online travel and lifestyle resource, which she recently sold to
Perfect Escapes. Prior to co-founding Circles, she served as the
Director of Values and Vision for The Body Shop. (11:45am-1pm,
E51-061)
MIT’s lead in entrepreneurship is well known, but women are consistently underrepresented. In fact, women are also underrepresented in executive level management, boards of directors, and venture capital. What are the reasons for this? Professor Fiona Murray will present some of her findings on women and leadership, address the myths and root causes of this issue, and lead a panel discussion with Golden Seeds ( www.goldenseeds.com ) and other venture investors on what angel investors and venture capitalists look for when investing in women-managed companies and what the common challenges women face when engaging in entrepreneurial activity. (4pm-7pm, room TBD)
SIP bidding, schedule, and abstracts will be posted for Sloan students by Tuesday, February 16th at https://sloanbid.mit.edu .
Please contact veenaj@mit.edu for questions related to the Women and Entrepreneurship SIP workshop.
