1.253/11.543 Final Assignment Posted, Role Playing Exercise, and Class Dinner

Hi Everyone: A number of things to share with you

1) THE FINAL ASSIGNMENT description has been posted to stellar. Sorry if anyone downloaded what was posted there earlier (assignment 3 from 2011: which is now reference material for this year's paper). Please review the assignment description before class on Friday. The assignment is in two-phases: a draft due by next friday, May 11, and the final paper due by May 18). Each of you has been assigned a different country or company to advise for the final assignment. If you absolutely think your country/company is unworkable, we can negotiate for a changes on Friday.

2) The final paper is in conjunction with the CLIMATE CHANGE ROLE-PLAYING SIMULATION that was scheduled for this friday (but due to a conflict we will be having it next week on May 11). Please let me know if for any reason you won't be in class on May 11 and unable to participate in the simulation.
* listeners: if you would like to participate in the in-class simulation, please let me know and i will assign you a role.

3) THE CLASS DINNER: We would like to have the class dinner on Friday, May 18 after your final paper is due (around 6pm at MIT). Please save the date and let me know if this won't work. It is one of the only windows of time, but if too many people can't make it we will try to consider other options.

4) Because of an unforeseen schedule conflit, THIS FRIDAY (May 4) will be the final lecture with Fred and Joe. Please try to be there.

5) Generally we were happy with the responses to ASSIGNMENT 3 . I will be sending out comments and grades shortly and we will discuss it in class on Friday.

Cheers,
Vig

11.543/1.253 Additional Reading and Additional Resource

Hi Everyone: Last email for today, i promise. We have added one more reading to this week's list. It is a a short 3-page piece but from the April 2012 The Atlantic magazine.

Also, have uploaded under assignment 3 one more resource: A memo written by fred on the experience of MIT with the mobility pass. It is not crucial that you review this, but for those of you who are interested it might be worth a skim.

See you all on friday. Fred and Joe will be both lecturing. Fred will discuss the Logan runway case (please review it) and Joe will be running a small exercise on NIMBYism and facility location.

Cheers,
Vig

1.253/11.543 Assignment 3 Final Description & Tomorrow's Lecture

Hi Everyone: The revised (and final) version of Assignment 3 has been posted to stellar. Same general description as the draft, but this gives you more direction and more resources. Also, a package of resources (articles, documents, etc) has been posted to stellar.

Tomorrow we will have a guest speaker in class, Sonia Hamel. She's very engaging and always provides an interesting perspective on shaping environmental policy in Massachusetts and working with former governor Romney.

Hope to see you all tomorrow,
Vig

1.253/11.543 Assignment 3 Draft Posted

Hi Everyone: The draft of Assignment 3 has been posted to stellar. Sorry if you downloaded the OLD AND INCORRECT version of the assignment form 2011 on Friday. The draft description posted will give you a overview of the topic and your tasks, which is focused on equity. We wanted to get it out to you ASAP since the major bones of the assignment won't change. But we will provide a revised version later this week that gives your more guidance on exactly what questions and issues you can focus on (since it's now a bit broad). We will also post data and reference materials on Stellar.

Please read over the draft description if you want to get started on thinking about this paper, as well as the materials in Logan Case Materials 2011.zip. We will discuss the Logan runway case in class as an example of an Environmental Justice debate.

As mentioned in class the assignment focuses on Cambridge and the area around MIT. The ongoing K2C2 planning process will be having public meetings that could be relevant this week

1.253/11.543 Assignment 2 More Clarification

Hi Everyone: One of your classmates was asking for clarification about the actual cash 4 clunkers legislation. HR520 was the bill introduced by senator Feinstein, but not exactly what was signed into law by President Obama. For example, there is no transit voucher in the final law. The 'Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act of 2009' as passed is available online here:
