Hi all,As I mentioned on Friday, I'll be on campus in the Chipman Room (bldg 6, opposite 6-113) meeting with course 3 students until 7:00 this evening. I'm willing to meet with anyone who wants a run-through before 8:30. It's probably best to meet in the classroom on the first floor of bldg 5. I'll be checking email through the afternoon, so let me know. My one request is that you be ready to rehearse - feel free to ask me to look at particular aspects of your talk.
All the best,

Last-Minute Presentation Tips
Hi everyone - As you get ready for tomorrow, here are some last-minute tips for preparing for presentations1. Number your slides. Although there are no absolute rules, plan on no more than one slide per minute of presentation. For a 15-minute presentation, 12-15 slides is a good number to aim for, plus backup slides of any information you think your audience might question.
2. Make headlines meaningful and specific. If you have one-word slide headlines, or a headline that could be true of any presentation, try to revise so you are including more specific information. For example, rather than saying “Requirements for Hull,” consider a title like “Hull Withstands a 100-Year Wave” so that the information on the slide supports a governing idea.
3. Set milestones within the talk. Consider which parts of the talk are major ideas. Divide your speaking time to set goals for addressing three or four of these ideas. For example, you might want to be sure to cover the first idea within five minutes, the second idea before eight minutes have passed, and so on.
4. Make clear transitions. Rehearse with your team mates, so that you move between speakers in a logical way.
5. Tie together ideas at the end. Make sure you have a conclusions slide. When you receive a two-minute warning, don’t try to cover new information. Instead, proceed to the conclusion and summarize the major points.
On Friday, I will ask you to present the information you have so far. I’ll let you deliver the talk without interruption, unless your talk goes far over the 15-minute limit. Then your classmates and instructors will have a chance to ask questions. We'll all provide constructive criticism and suggestions.
If you have questions or concerns before tomorrow afternoon, please feel free to email me.
Cheers, MaryBe sure to have a full draft of your presentation to rehearse with
on Friday. I will have time tomorrow after 3 and could also
fit in time on Thursday if you want to show some of your slides or
get other presentation help.
On Friday I will ask you to run through your draft presentations
and time you. Then you can get feedback on style and substance from
your instructors and other students.
In addition, I have a list of resources and my slides from last
Friday, which I will post later tonight.
Best wishes to all,
Mary
