A image of the halo in the east coast
Yesterday there was a beautiful sun halo in the east coast. Have you ever seen one before?http://earthsky.org/todays-image/solar-halo-seen-over-u-s-east-coast-yesterday
The explanation of this effect (diffraction of tiny ice crystals), is similar to the first problem in the practice examples. Enjoy!

Typo fixed in Lecture April 29
Hello class, please note the lecture on April 29 is updated with a few typo regarding the DOF are fixed (highlighted). Also, to clarify the depth of focus of the picture taken by Manohar, what is provided is the f-number of the lens, so we are calculating the depth of focus of the image recorded by the CCD or CMOS chip. The depth of field (as a measure of the distance in the actual object) is much longer, because the numerical aperture in the object side(from the lens to the dog/grass) is much smaller.
