Final Exam: 5/20, 1:30~4:30PM @ 37-212

Dear all,

The final exam will be held at 37-212 tomorrow, at 1:30PM ~ 4:30 PM.
You can bring your equation notes (up to 3 sheets of letter paper, double-sided), a calculator, and a ruler.

Three last comments on the most frequently asked questions, with necessary clarifications on previous mistakes:

1. Lens Fourier Transform w. point source illumination
The 2014 review problem #4 (zebra) deals with a point source illuminating a transparency before a lens, rather than a plane wave. Please refer to the derivation for Figure 5.12 in Goodman book (p119~120), especially Eq 5-57. The solution of the practice problem has been corrected and uploaded on Stellar. Thanks to Thanasi and Yi for their input.

2. Definition of ATF (Follow Goodman book, rather than lecture note)
(real domain)  PSF -> Fourier Transform -> ATF (fourier domain)
(real domain) iPSF -> Fourier Transform -> OTF (fourier domain)
OTF is obtained from the autocorrelation of ATF.
For an exact reference, please see Goodman 137~140, rather than the lecture note. Thanks to Jingzhi and Peter for their questions and input.

3. Coherence
For OTF/MTF imaging, spatial coherence matters (not temporal.) In Goodman book, coherence/incoherence refers to SPATIAL coherence/incoherence. (ref. Goodman p132) Also, spatial incoherence is different from simply having a "curved/ distorted wavefront". A spatially incoherent source needs to have a random phase distribution in space. Thanks to Donggyu for discussion.

Lastly, thanks for all of your hard work throughout the semester. Good luck with your final exam, and I hope you have a wonderful summer.

Best, Eunnie

Practice problem/ final exam solutions posted

The solutions sets are posted for the practice problems of 2014 and 2013, for your reference.
For last year's final exam, no official solution exists, but P1~P3 overlap with our homeworks and I have created a solution for P4 for your reference.

Good luck with studying!

Best,
Eunnie
