2.S998  Additive Manufacturing

Spring 2014

Instructor: Anastasios John Hart

TAs: Jamison Go, Alfonso Alexander Perez

Lecture:  TR11-12.30  (3-270)

Synopsis:

This course will build a comprehensive understanding of the methods and applications of additive manufacturing (AM). Lecture themes include: fundamentals of additive processing of polymers, metals, and ceramics; machine designs and control strategies; 3D geometry representations and metrology; material properties; and digital assembly. Guest speakers from academia and industry will highlight technology trends and emerging applications. Labs will be held periodically (at times to be arranged) and will use desktop FDM and stereolithography machines to explore process capabilities. Assessment will be based on an in-class presentation, lab assignments, and a major project wherein each team investigates and prototypes an innovative AM concept (e.g., a new machine or process element, printing of a novel material, etc.).

Announcements

Poster session

Hey Everyone, just wanted to give you some updates for tomorrow:

1) You can bring your things to be set up starting at 10:30.
2) Every team is expected to have someone there by 10:45 (let AJ know if you cannot make it on time)
3) We will allot 1 power cable spot per team. This means most of you will not be able to have a live demo so come prepared with a video demonstration and/or the physical hardware but not powered.
4) Use the following layout:
1 - scanning
2 - ice cream
3 - contact printing and flextronics
4 - COURSE STAFF
5 - composites
6 - chitin
7 - glass
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ycbglcpk9b5br46/2.S998%20Lobby%207%20demo%20layout%20update.pdf
5) Poster boards will be provided along with your poster if you sent it in today before 9am. Otherwise, you are expected to bring your own poster.

I apologize for the last minute notice if any of you were planning on a live demo, but I was not able to get EHS permission for some of the chemicals/demos that would be present. The best that we can do is to have the physical hardware present and off. The only exception to this is the 3D scanning team.

Email AJ if you have any last minute questions.

Final expo and bridges

Hey teams, I will send out a few more announcements today. I am trying to separate them based upon topic so that it is more relevant.

We need you all to please bring your bridges (or any broken parts) to the final expo. We will have a table dedicated to the course so that passer's by can learn about AM and what you all did this term. We expect that everyone will be able to bring it in; please email AJ Perez if you are unable to do so.
