Announcements

REMINDER: Attendance tomorrow and Thursday is very important!

Greetings all,

We are very much on the home stretch. Hopefully you have submitted your exercise by now, or will be soon if we made alternative arrangements. It should be fun playing them this week as we wrap up.

We wanted to remind you that attendance in both classes is very important, as (as per the instructions) a substantial proportion of your grade on this assignment will be the peer evaluation you give others.

Also, these will be very busy sessions with little time to read the instructions and run the exercises, so we'd ask you to please arrive on time so we can start at 2:35 sharp.

Thank you, and see you tomorrow!

Reminders: Film for tomorrow, RPS exercises, and p-set #3

Greetings all,

Hope you enjoyed the session with Stacie yesterday. Thank you for having some thoughtful questions for her.

Just a repeat of the reminders I made in class yesterday:

1) Please watch The Final Offer (link on Stellar) before class tomorrow. The discussion will revolve around it.

2) Your RPS exercises are due by this Saturday (May 9th). Please review the individual feedback we gave you, along with the general feedback sent last week and let us know if you have any questions.

3) It is due in one hour so hopefully you've already submitted or are close to doing so, but your third and final p-sets are due today!

See you tomorrow!

Exercise feedback

Greetings all,

By now, you should have received individual emails from Eric with feedback from us based on your half-page exercise proposals. We were generally quite impressed - you have come up with an interesting range of topics. The last two classes of the semester should be fun!

Beyond the individual feedback, here are some general things to think about as you flesh out your exercises:

1) Learning objective - First and foremost, keep the learning objective at the front of your mind as you draft. Remember, the purpose of these exercises is to hone a skill or convey a negotiation-related insight to participants. They should primarily serve that purpose.

2) Negotiation questions - In line with the first point, think about these negotiation-related questions as you draft: What is the key theme or lesson? What would a ‘win’ look like for each side? How can they arrive at those wins within the context of the exercise? And, how do their statements and/or behaviors in the exercise (vis-à-vis your key theme or lessons) shape their ability to reach a win (or not)? What are their respective BATNAs? What is the ZOPA?

3) Teaching note - We would suggest that you explicitly introduce the learning objective and possibly other relevant information, like who this exercise might be targeted towards (i.e., who would benefit from playing it outside our class), in a ‘teaching note’ that accompanies the exercise. This can be a short paragraph on a separate page before the exercise you submit. This is typically done to help those considering using an exercise (i.e., instructors) find something that meets their pedagogical needs, but here it will help us to understand what you are attempting to do with the exercise.

4) Shared vs. confidential - You may develop shared general and then separate role-specific confidential instructions, or just separate confidentials that contain some common and some different information within. Either way, consider what you are making common vs. confidential and why.

5) Complexity and time - Some of you have proposed very interesting but quite complex cases. We would suggest you chose something that is manageable within the confines of a maximum 40 minute exercise, including time for reading the instructions.

6) Number of parties - Please keep to two parties. This is both for logistical reasons around running these during the last two classes, and reflects the level of complexity we are expecting from you.

7) Deadline - As announced in class yesterday, we would like to have your exercises by sometime on Saturday May 9th. If you cannot get to us by then, please let us know in advance and we’ll do our best to accommodate later submissions.

In general, we suggest that you review the assignment instructions again as you craft your exercises. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Otherwise, we look forward to seeing your final products!

Exercise reading for tomorrow + p-set #3 questions posted

Greetings all,

A couple important announcements:

1) Tomorrow's exercise - They are coming fast and furious these days. We will be running the Homelessness in Niceville exercise tomorrow. We ask you to please read the general instructions in advance. You may download them here: http://goo.gl/Twk9R2. We will hand out the confidentials at the beginning of class (along with the generals in hardcopy, so no need to print).

2) Want to facilitate? - This is an exercise with a defined facilitator role. If you are interested in practicing your facilitation skills, let us know and we will try to slot you into that position. First-come, first-served.

3) P-set #3 questions - As per the announcement yesterday, the p-set #3 questions have been posted to Stellar. The answers are due by 6pm next Wednesday (May 6th).

4) Exercise proposal feedback - We are in the midst of reviewing your proposals, and plan to have feedback to you later tonight.

Cheers, Todd
