Information:
Welcome!
The aim of this course is to introduce the fundamental notions of
point-set topology, and the very basics of algebraic topology. This
might be the first course in pure mathematics for many students,
and here you will have a chance to learn abstract mathematical
reasoning. The materials page already contains some more detailed
information, and I will post a schedule for the class soon.
Please write me an email with your questions.
Announcements
Final
the final exam is approaching, and here's a few info.
-where: usual classroom 4-231
-when: May 19, 9am-12noon. Please arrive a few minutes before so we can start at 9:05.
-what: The exam will cover the whole course, with a bigger emphasis on what we covered after the midterm.
-how: You should know all the definitions and the statements covered in class, and you should be able to do the exercises of the psets. Do not learn the long proofs from the course by heart (I won't ask you to reproduce them), but be familiar with the techniques. If you want to practice you can find extra exercises in Munkres book, or in the following books:
Tammo Tom Dieck, Algebraic topology
Allen Hatcher, Algebraic topology
Glen Bredon, Topology and Geometry
Please write me or on piazza if you have any questions.

Midterm
The midterm will take place on Thursday, March 19, from 9:35 to 10:55, in our usual classroom.
Please be there by 9:30, so we can start in time.
The test will cover everything up to Thursday 12 lecture, which is going to be somewhere around compactness. You should know well: all the definitions, the pset exercices. You should be comfortable with the proofs we saw in class, but you are not expected to know them perfectly (I won't ask you to reproduce one from beginning to end). Munkres' book has a lot of great exercises, I suggest you to do some at the end of the sections we covered.
See you next week,
Emanuele

Next week
I will be at a conference next week (March 9-13). Here is how 18.901 will be affected:
-Lectures: Normal schedule. My colleague Joey, world expert in higher categories and deformation theory, will replace me.
-Pset5: extended deadline, on March 17 (Tuesday). Problem session on Tuesday 10 as usual. (Remark: The midterm is on March 19, and there will be no Pset to hand in that day).
-Office hours: No office hours on Tuesday 10. I will hold double office hours the week after:
March 16 from 4 to 6 (the day before Pset 5 is due)
March 17 from 4 to 6.
-Piazza: I will log on regularly to answer your questions, but less frequently than usual.
See you tomorrow in class,
Emanuele
