Next week: Mars Lab
I wanted to give you a heads up that next week we will be meeting in Mars Lab to go over ACT's fabrication resources and to build a model for our exhibition space so that we can begin to plan out how our works function as parts of one whole. Please be punctual (12:45!).
We will also be discussing Gustav Metzger's Damaged Nature, so know that it is MANDATORY you review this reading and come prepared to talk about it.
To sum up, for next week you need:
A revised plan for your project: description, week by week work breakdown, etc
Ideas for how your work could be incorporated into the exhibition space
An itemized buget for your project

Homework reminder
This is a reminder that I am still missing most of the homework from this week both on Dropbox and on the blog. Lucia, since you just joined, you have this week to catch up, so don't hesitate to email me if you have any questions about what is expected. The homework that MUST be completed and submitted to Dropbox and the blog are:
Writing: 1000 words max.
Reflect on the following questions, referring to the readings (and any other sources you find pertinent):
What should art be for?
What should science be for?
What should technology be for?
What do you think is humanity’s biggest collective fear?
What do you think is a human being’s deepest personal fear?
What are our biggest communication barriers?
What is your relationship to nature?
What is humanity’s greatest potential?
Describe five examples where you find auto-destruction as a creative force.
Describe three things you think of and provoke response from your stomach. These can be positive and/or negative.
If you quote outside sources or refer to outside work, bring in material on this to class, post it on the blog.
Project:
*Note: You should be prepared to speak about this packet, what you’re thinking, and share it with the class.
Mid-term plan packet:
A 1 page write-up of your mid-term project
A completed exhibition form (this was handed to you on the first
day of class; Lucia I can get one to you if you don't have the
file from last semester!)
A list of what you will need to present on March 16 (THIS IS
ESSENTIAL FOR ME TO HELP YOU PRESENT YOUR IDEAS AND WORK)
An email to Seth and Madeleine explaining what you’d like to do, and scheduling a time to do it. (Gedney must be cc’ed)
Research, including material samples, objects, photos,
articles
Actual materials, sketches, plan some sort of prototyping activity or experiment that you would like to do with the materials.
Reflection: 1000 words max
Write a responses to your classmates’ and professor’s first reactions to your work. What do you think still needs more research and consideration? What are you ready to make? What are you most unclear on? What do you think the central ideas of your piece are?
Plus the readings of the Metzger's manifestos, Wilson's writing about Metzger's work, Weizman, and Metzger's Demised Nature. These are all on Stellar. This is a class that is principally about prototyping, but it is Gabriel's expectation that your work in fabrication is accompanied by deep thought and consideration process, which is documented and advanced through your writing and class discussions. They are MANDATORY. Please everyone submit these ASAP, and please refer to the syllabus again for the breakdown of your grade and assignments.
Thanks so much everyone!
Gedney.
