15.385  Sustainability Oriented Innovation

Spring 2016

Instructor: Jason Jesurum Jay

TA: Sergio Ezequiel Gonzalez

Lecture:  T TH 2:30-4pm  (E51-376)

Information:

Sustainability challenges - in physical domains like waste, water, food, energy, and mobility, as well as human capital domains like health and education - represent some of the most significant business opportunities of the century. Realizing them, however, will require significant innovation: not just in technologies and products, but also in processes, business models, and market infrastructures. What does it take to bring sustainability-oriented innovations (SOI) to market and to scale? How do we decide whether to invest our precious time and resources into efforts that may change the world or fizzle and die? This class explores these questions from the perspectives of entrepreneurs, corporations, and investors looking for both financial and social return on their investments. It uses a combination of case discussions, industry speakers, lectures, and hands-on projects. Final projects can drive forward students' own SOI ideas, or contribute to others' efforts through market research and analytic tool development.

NOTE: THERE ARE NO PRE-REQUISITES FOR THIS CLASS. The registrar course catalog entry remains from an earlier incarnation of 15.385.

Last task! Peer review survey for teams

In this peer-review survey you assess the contribution and helpfulness of your other team members to your SOI project. Did each member of your team contribute to the team? Were they helpful and positive?

Team contribution scores (15% of final project grade) will be the average of the points one receives from the members of your team. Every team member is expected to complete this survey. The responses you provide will not be disclosed to the members of your team or to any other students in the class.
