Paper Rewrite Extension

Dear all,

Given the delay in the due date for the second paper, I've decided to postpone the final deadline for paper rewrites as well. All rewrites must be submitted to your TA no later than Monday, May 8 (not May 1 as originally scheduled on the syllabus).

Best,
Michael

Jack and Jill

Dear all,

For ease of reference I am attaching the Jack and Jill cases that we discussed in class yesterday.

Best,
Michael

Jack comes from a poor family. Before he was born, his parents lost everything they owned in a natural disaster. Jack’s parents did not have the money to send him to school, so Jack is qualified for menial labor only. Jack agrees to work on Alex’s farm, picking and canning fruit in unsafe conditions, for $4 per hour. Working 12 hours per day and 6 days per week, Jack makes only enough to survive. He does not make enough money to pay for school for himself or for his children.

Jill comes from a slightly less poor, nonwhite family. Her parents were able to send her to school, and she excelled as a pupil. She is more than qualified to work in Bob’s tool factory, or to be a teacher in Charlie’s private school. However, Bob won’t hire her because she is a woman, and Charlie won’t hire her because she is not white. Faced with the choice of starving or working for Alex, she takes a job with Alex, who offers her $3 per hour, which is $1 less than he offers his male employees. At $3 per hour, Jill would not make enough money to survive if she were to work 6 days a week. She thus works 7 days a week on Alex’s farm.

Paper 2 Extension/Due Date

Dear all,

Due to the snow storm earlier in the semester and our truly excellent class discussion, we are two lectures behind schedule. For that reason, I am concerned that we did not cover all of the material necessary to successfully answer the question for the second paper.

In order to remedy this situation, I have decided to extend the deadline for the second paper by one week. It is now due Monday April 10 (not Monday April 3). This will give me an additional week of lectures to discuss Nozick's theory of justice in its entirety.

Have a great spring break!
Michael

Quiz 2 Extension/Due Date

Dear all,

In light of the fact that our class is running a bit behind schedule, I have decided to change the due date for the second quiz.

It will now be due, in recitation, on Friday March 17. This, however, does not affect the due date for the second paper.

Have a great weekend.
Michael
