6.835  Intelligent Multimodal User Interfaces

Spring 2017

Professor: Randall Davis

TA: Brian W Copeland

Lecture:  TR11-12.30  (4-370)

Information:

Check under Materials for an information sheet that describes the course and a draft syllabus that will give you an idea of the topics to be covered.

No class today due to the snowstorm. I know that some of you are trying to decide whether to take the class. Later today I will record a powerpoint slideshow mini-lecture covering the first 9 or so slides I would have presented today, describing the course material, workload, etc.

There is also a Piazza page

https://piazza.com/mit/spring2017/6835/

where you can sign up and ask questions; I will be checking there today and answering your questions. In additional feel free to email me or Brian directly with specific questions.

Presentation Schedule for Final Project

The presentation schedule for next week has just been posted in the materials section. This will also be the basis for all future presentation weeks. Next mini-project, term projects

The next mini-project has been posted. This one also requires Matlab, but is much more focused on using some existing code rather than having to write your own. We expect it to be less troubling to people without much Matlab experience.

I have also posted the call for term project proposals, an assignment due next Monday. As the writeup indicates, the idea is to get you thinking now about what you might do. These will not be graded; we will read them and give you feedback to help you sharpen up your ideas and help ensure they are plausible for a term project. The proposal need not be long, but it should be the result of some serious thought. As usual feel free to get in touch with any questions.

Slack Days

The intent of the Slack Days is to accommodate those times in the term when it seems everything is happening at once and you just can't get it all done on time.

Everyone gets a Slack Day budget of 2 days, to be used throughout the term, in 6 hour units. To be (unreasonably) precise about it: you can turn in one mini-project 2 days late and still be ok, or turn in two of them 1 day late and still be ok, or turn in all four each six hours late. You do not have to ask ahead of time, but you do need to email the TA to indicate you want to use one (or more) of your Slack units.

And yes, we realize this may mean you have to decide whether to take a late penality or use a Slack unit, and no, we don't yet know what the precise penalty is for lateness. As above, the idea is to provide a little relief when needed, not to set up a system to be gamed. Pleased use it in that spirit.

Office Hours Wed 2/22

Just to be sure everyone gets the info:

There will be office hours today (Wed) from 3-5, in room 26-310. (We moved it to today so there was more time to get help before the mini-project is due.)

Matlab tutorials

The Materials section of the course site on Stellar now has links to a number of good, basic Matlab tutorials. We don't have one that's specifically oriented toward the mini-project, but if you get accustomed to the basics of Matlab's interaction style and syntax, you won't have much trouble. Do feel free to ask questions on piazza if you're stuck.
