17.40 - AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY - Fall 2003

Prof. Stephen Van Evera!

Welcome to 17.40 - American Foreign Policy. This course covers the history of American foreign policy since 1914, current policy questions, and the future of U.S. Policy. History covered includes America's main wars, interventions, and foreign policy crises, with a focus on Cold War episodes (the Korean and Vietnam wars, the Cuban missile crisis, CIA coups in Iran and Guatemala).

The class will also focus on American foreign policy in the present and beyond. How should the US conduct the war on Al Qaeda? Should the US conduct a wider war on other terrorist groups? How should the US deal with rogue states that seek weapons of mass destruction? What is the likely impact of China's rising power?

Also covered: functional topic areas, including human rights, the global environment, foreign economic policy, and military policy. We focus on policy evaluation. What consequences did these policies produce for the US and for other countries? Were/are these consequences good or bad?
