Additional Office Hours Dec 10 and 11

I will be available in my office (E34-412) on Tuesday (Dec 10) AND Wednesday (Dec 11), from 3.30 to 5.30 pm for discussions with students. Please bring whatever doubts, confusions or questions that you may have and we will try and resolve these. Clarification from office hours

Hello class,

I believe there was some confusion in the office hours yesterday. Hopefully this email will clarify some of the concerns you all have.

Evaporator -
I had told a few people that area (A) can be back-calculated using nt and Db expression, by solving all the equations together. I realize this is a convoluted method and may not really work well in estimating the final numbers. A more easier approach would be to estimate the pressure of the water vapor (P) and using that number to go through the calculations (and calculate A). This P can be one of the parameters you can choose to control.

Ultrafiltration -
1. Some people complained to me that there are more variables than equations in this system, and that is true. The reason is that recycle (R) does not affect the calculation of B, P and N, and hence it is a variable that needs to be estimated through other means. A minimum flow rate through each cartridge and max flow rate through pipes will provide limits on R. You may choose to impose any constraint on the system too, if you feel that's appropriate.
2. I misled a few people saying that in the equation N = 27.9-ln(f), N is the overall flux. That is not true. N here is the flux per cartridge.
