5.60 Thermodynamics and Kinetics
Spring 2012
Instructor: Troy Van Voorhis
TAs: Thomas Gurry, Michael George Mavros, Peter Daniel Thill, Matthew Gregory Welborn, Wanqin Xie, Hsiang-Yu Yang
Lecture: MWF10 (54-100)
Subject Description:
Equilibrium properties of macroscopic systems. Basic thermodynamics: state of a system, state variables. Work, heat, first law of thermodynamics, thermochemistry. Second and third law of thermodynamics: entropy and free energy, including the molecular basis for these thermodynamic functions. Phase equilibrium and properties of solutions. Chemical equilibrium of reactions in gas and solution phases. Rates of chemical reactions. Special attention to thermodynamics related to global energy issues.

Final exam logistics
The final exam will be held on Wednesday, May 23 from 9 AM - noon at the Johnson Ice Rink. You will be allowed a calculator and ONE double-sided 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper with information about the course.Announced on 20 May 2012 10:55 a.m. by Michael George Mavros
Practice final and extra problems
A practice final exam and extra kinetics problems (including transition state theory and Marcus theory) have been posted. Enjoy! Also, if you have a final exam conflict (i.e. another class you are taking has its final exam scheduled for exactly the same time as the 5.60 final), please let us know ASAP! Do not wait until Tuesday to let us know! Thanks, and good luck studying!
